How to remove the OptimumSearch unwanted app
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is OptimumSearch?
OptimumSearch (search.optimum.icu) is a potentially unwanted application (PUA), a browser hijacker designed to promote search.optimum.icu (the address of a fake search engine) by changing browser settings and adding the "Managed by your organization" feature.
It might also collect various data. Browser hijackers are categorized as PUAs, since people often download and install them unintentionally.
OptimumSearch promotes its associated fake search engine by setting the address of the default search engine, homepage, and new tab to search.optimum.icu. In this way, it ensures that users visit this address when they open a browser, new tab or enter search queries into the URL bar.
Note that search.optimum.icu is classified as a fake search engine, since it provides results generated by the Google search engine (it simply redirects to google.com). The only way to remove the address of fake search engines from the aforementioned settings is to uninstall the browser hijacker that assigned them.
In this case, users would have to uninstall OptimumSearch so that they can enter a preferred address rather than search.optimum.icu. This, however, is not the only reason to uninstall OptimumSearch. This app modifies browser policies. For example, it can prevent users from accessing certain websites, disable features, etc.
OptimumSearch and other apps can often gather information. For example, IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations, etc. Some of the data might include personal, sensitive information. Developers misuse the recorded data by selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who can then misuse it to generate revenue in other ways.
In doing so, they put users at risk of problems relating to browsing safety, privacy or even more serious problems such as identity theft. Therefore, OptimumSearch and other, similar apps should never be trusted.

Typically, browser hijackers and other PUAs are advertised as useful, legitimate applications, however, they do not provide any valid features, improve the browsing experience, or any other value. Most are designed only to help the developers to generate revenue.
In summary, they are useless and can be the reason behind serious problems. Therefore, OptimumSearch and other installed PUA should be uninstalled immediately. Examples of other browser hijackers are SearchZone, Sealoid and Spinyon.
How did OptimumSearch install on my computer?
Typically, users download and install PUAs through deceptive advertisements that execute certain scripts, or during download/installation of other software. In most cases, this happens when developers distribute PUAs by including them into the download/installation set-ups of other software and present them as 'additional offers'.
This distribution method is known as "bundling". Offers to download and install unwanted apps are often listed in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the set-ups. PUAs are downloaded and installed when people download and install their programs without checking and changing the settings.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Download/installation channels such as third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule) are often used to distribute potentially unwanted programs and malware. Therefore, it is not safe to use these methods to download or install software.
The safest way to is to use official websites and direct download links. Check all "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings and decline offers to download or install additional, unwanted software. Do not trust or click intrusive ads appearing on dubious websites, since these can cause unwanted downloads/installations or open untrusted websites.
Remove all unwanted, suspicious extensions, add-ons and plug-ins from the browser immediately. Also remove software of this kind that is installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with OptimumSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
