Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MultiUpgrade?
Adware such as MultiUpgrade is rogue software that serves advertisements. Apps of this type often collect various user-system information.
People do not generally download or install apps such as MultiUpgrade intentionally. Therefore, they are classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). Note that MultiUpgrade promotes the Safe Finder website (a web search tool) by opening it via akamaihd.net.
Commonly, adware-type software programs feed users with advertisements such as coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups and others. When clicked, they open various untrusted websites or cause unwanted downloads and installations by executing certain scripts. In addition adware-type apps can gather various information.
Commonly, apps such as MultiUpgrade collect browsing-related information such as, for example, addresses of opened (visited) websites, entered search queries, geolocations, IP addresses, however, they might also record sensitive, personal information. The adware developers sell the data to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue other ways.
Installed adware (including MultiUpgrade) can cause issues relating to browsing safety, privacy, unwanted downloads, installations, identity theft and other problems. Therefore, it is not safe to have MultiUpgrade or other similar apps installed on the browser or operating system.

For these reasons, never download or install PUAs.
How did MultiUpgrade install on my computer?
Generally, users download and install adware (and other PUAs) unintentionally by clicking deceptive advertisements, which execute certain scripts, or together with other programs that have PUAs included into their set-ups. Commonly, PUAs are distributed by including them into download/installation set-ups as 'additional offers'.
Such offers are usually mentioned in settings such as "Custom", "Advanced", etc. This PUA distribution method is called "bundling" and works when people download and install their software without changing the default settings in the setup (changing the settings enables you to decline offers to download or install unwanted software).
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Files and programs should not be downloaded through dubious channels. For example, Peer-to-Peer networks (eMule, torrent clients), unofficial, dubious pages, third party downloaders, and so on. Third party installers should be avoided. Commonly, these channels are used to distribute unwanted, even malicious programs.
All software should be downloaded from official websites and via direct links. Furthermore, check all download and installation settings such as "Custom" and "Advanced" and decline offers to download or install additionally-included, unwanted apps. Do not click intrusive ads that appear on dubious sites, as they can cause download/installation of PUAs.
Remove all unwanted/unknown, suspicious extensions, plug-ins and add-ons that are installed on the browser immediately. The same should be applied to software of this kind that is installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with MultiUpgrade, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
