How to uninstall the Driver Maps browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is the Driver Maps browser hijacker?
Driver Maps is a rogue app, endorsed as a tool for quick access to various maps and driving routes. It operates by modifying browsers to promote search.hdrivermaps.com, a fake search engine.
Therefore, this app is categorized as a browser hijacker. Software within this category commonly has data tracking capabilities, which are employed to monitor users' browsing activity. Since few people install Driver Maps unintentionally, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Browser hijackers target Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other popular browsers with large user bases. These rogue applications assign the addresses of their bogus search tools as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs.
Driver Maps promotes search.hdrivermaps.com in this fashion. To detail how this affects browsing, with Driver Maps installed, each search query typed into the URL bar and each new tab/window opened redirects to search.hdrivermaps.com. Fake search engines are of no value to regular users, as they are unable to provide unique results.
Therefore, they tend to redirect to Google, Yahoo, Bing and other legitimate search engines. These legitimate sites can be used regardless (i.e., without redundant redirects from fake engines). The bogus web search engine associated with Driver Maps (search.hdrivermaps.com) cannot generate search results, and so it simply redirects to search.yahoo.com.
Furthermore, these modifications are impossible to undo without removing the browser hijacker. Any changes users try to make to their browsers are automatically undone, if access to the settings is permitted at all. Most browser hijackers have data tracking capabilities.
They monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, paged viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The data is likely to be shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) intent on misusing it for profit.
Therefore, installed data tracking apps can lead to financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To protect device integrity and user safety, you are advised to immediately remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins.

CrypSearch, Access Free Templates, and AnonymoSearch are some examples of browser hijackers (there are thousands online). They typically seem legitimate and tempt users to install with offers of various functions. Despite how good the features may sound, they are usually nonoperational.
This applies to most PUAs. These unwanted applications have just one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. Regular users receive no value. PUAs modify browsers and promote bogus search engines, force-open untrusted and malicious sites, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and gather sensitive data.
How did Driver Maps install on my computer?
Some PUAs (including Driver Maps) have "official" download pages. These apps also proliferate through the download/installation set-ups of other software. "Bundling" is the term used to describe this deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular programs with unwanted or malicious content.
By rushing through download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using presets, etc.), many users endanger their systems with potential infiltration and infections originating from bundled additions. Intrusive ads also proliferate these applications. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
All content should be researched prior to download/installation or purchase. Use official and verified download sources. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders are untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features and other additions. Intrusive advertisements may seem normal and harmless, however, they can redirect to dubious web pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating and so on).
If you encounter these ads/redirects, inspect the system and eliminate all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay. If your computer is already infected with Driver Maps, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
