How to remove redirects to mynewtabs.com

What is mynewtabs.com?
Identical to msearches.com, mynewtabs.com is a fake search engine. These bogus search engines are usually endorsed as tools designed to improve the browsing experience (e.g. providing fast searches, accurate search results, etc.). Fake search engines are promoted by Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) classified as browser hijackers.
These apps operate by modifying browsers to promote their rogue search tools. Furthermore, they have data tracking capabilities, which are employed to monitor users' browsing activity.
Popular browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer are common browser hijacker targets. Following successful infiltration, these rogue applications reassign the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URL to the addresses of their bogus search engines.
To elaborate on how these changes affect browsers: each new tab/window opened and each search query typed into the URL bar redirects to the fake search engine. In the case of a browser hijacker promoting mynewtabs.com, all of the aforementioned settings redirect to this URL.
Most bogus search engines are unable to generate unique results, and simply redirect to genuine sites (e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing and others). The few that can generate results typically provide inaccurate information or promote untrusted, malicious sites.
Additionally, recovering a hijacked browser without removing the hijacker app is impossible. With it still present, any changes users attempt to make to their browsers are automatically reset (if access to the settings is permitted at all).
As mentioned, browser hijackers commonly monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This private data is then shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) intent on misusing it for profit.
Therefore, the presence of data-tracking software on systems can lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

Browser hijackers often seem legitimate and offer a wide variety of "useful" functions. The PDF Tools Plus, NJoyMusic Search Plus, DIY Projects and Gamers Buddy are some examples of such apps. These features rarely work as promised work and, even if they do, it is not as advertised. In fact, this applies to all PUAs.
The only purpose of these rogue applications is to generate revenue for the developers at users' expense. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs modify browsers to promote fake search engines, deliver intrusive advertisements, cause redirects to untrusted/malicious web pages and collect sensitive data.
How did mynewtabs.com install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other programs. This deceptive marketing method of packing regular content with unwanted or malicious software is termed "bundling".
Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled apps onto devices, thereby endangering them with potential infiltration and infection. Certain PUAs have "official" download sites.
Intrusive ads also proliferate these applications - when clicked, they execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
All products should be researched prior to download/installation. You are advised to use only official and verified download channels. Untrustworthy download sources such as free file-hosting websites, P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders can offer deceptive and/or bundled content.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, functions and so on. Intrusive ads often seem normal and harmless, however, they can cause redirects to dubious pages (e.g. pornography, gambling, adult-dating, etc.).
If you encounter these ads/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all dubious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate it.
