How to remove redirects to nvux.xyz
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is nvux.xyz?
nvux.xyz is the address of a fake search engine. Typically, these bogus sites are promoted by browser hijackers - Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) that change certain browser settings. This fake search engine is promoted by a PUA called CERX, which is related to the QIP rogue app.
Note that most browser hijackers also possess data tracking capabilities, which they employ to monitor users' browsing activity. Furthermore, PUAs do not need explicit user consent to be installed onto devices.
Fake search engines are promoted through unauthorized modifications to browser settings. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other popular browsers are common targets of hijacker applications.
Following successful infiltration, they reassign the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of their fraudulent web search engines. For example, with a browser hijacker promoting nvux.xyz installed, each new tab/window opened and each query typed into the URL bar redirects to this fake search engine.
While these changes may seem insignificant, they significantly diminish the browsing experience. Furthermore, most fake search engines are unable to generate unique results (they simply redirect to legitimate search engines).
Even if they can provide search results, they are usually inaccurate, unrelated to the typed query, and can promote untrustworthy and/or malicious websites. It is impossible to recover an affected browser, without removing the hijacker app.
While the browser hijacker is present, any changes users attempt to make to the browser are automatically reset (if indeed access to settings is allowed at all). As mentioned, most browser hijackers can track data, and those promoting nvux.xyz are no exception.
These apps monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.) and collect users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details).
The gathered data is then shared with third parties and misused for profit. In summary, data-tracking content can result in serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. Therefore, you are strongly advised to remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

nvux.xyz is practically identical to mkob.xyz and also shares similarities with search.landslidesearch.com, search.ishimotto.com, quickgosearch.com and countless other fake search engines. These sites are promoted by browser hijackers, which are often successfully disguised as legitimate and useful tools.
In fact, the advertised features tend to be nonoperational and these applications simply cause various issues. The sole purpose of all unwanted apps/content is to generate revenue for the developers. To regular users, they are useless and can be harmful.
How did nvux.xyz install on my computer?
PUAs are commonly spread through the download/installation set-ups of other software. This deceptive marketing tactic of pre-packing normal products with unwanted or malicious programs is called "bundling".
Rushing download and installation processes (ignoring terms, using pre-set options, skipping steps, etc.) endangers devices with potential system infiltration and infections. Certain applications of this type have "official" download sites, however, they can also be endorsed by deceptive/scam web pages (e.g. those claiming that a crucial piece of software is outdated/missing, etc.).
Intrusive ads also proliferate PUAs. When clicked, they can execute scripts designed to download/install PUAs without users' permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Research all content to verify its legitimacy, before downloading/installing. Use official and verified download channels. Untrustworthy download sources such as free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders are more likely to offer deceptive and/or bundled programs.
Approach download and installation processes with care. Read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of downloading/installing supplementary apps, tools, features and so on.
Intrusive ads typically seem legitimate and innocuous, however, once clicked, they can redirect to dubious web pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating and others). If you encounter these ads/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all dubious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins.
If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate it.
