How to stop mkob.xyz from being opened
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is mkob.xyz?
mkob.xyz is the address of a fake search engine. Typically, fake search engines are promoted through browser hijackers, potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) that change certain browser settings. Note that mkob.xyz is promoted through a PUA called CERX, however, other apps (such as APP) can also be used. CERX is related to another app of this type called QIP.
Note that browser hijackers change settings within browsers and gather browsing data. Frequently, people download and install these apps inadvertently.
Most browser hijackers promote fake search engines by changing browser settings. Typically, they do this by changing the address of the homepage, default search engine and new tab to the URL of a fake search engine.
CERX and other browser hijackers that promote mkob.xyz do not always change these settings, however, when they do, users are forced to visit mkob.xyz when they open a browser (new window), new tab or enter search queries into the URL bar. CERX and other apps redirect users to mkob.xyz even when they do not change any settings.
Furthermore, mkob.xyz is opened through qxsearch.com, another dubious website. To stop being forced to visit mkob.xyz and qxsearch.com, you must uninstall CERX and other PUAs (including APP) that promote this address.
Typically, it is impossible to remove the address of the fake search engine from the aforementioned settings without uninstalling the browser hijacker that originally changed them. This is not the only reason to uninstall browser hijackers from browsers and operating systems.
Typically, apps of this type collect browsing data such as IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited websites, and other data of this type. In some cases, they record personal, sensitive details. The developers tend to sell all data collected by such apps to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue.
Gathered information can also be misused to steal identities, and thus users could experience problems relating to browsing safety, privacy, etc.

Some examples of other fake search engines are ieodk.xyz and qikc.xyz. As mentioned, most are promoted through browser hijackers. Typically, these PUAs are advertised as useful, legitimate, etc. Unfortunately, most cause problems and are useless. They deliver no useful features and are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
How did CERX install on my computer?
Typically, potentially unwanted applications are distributed through the download and/or installation set-ups of other programs. This distribution method is called "bundling" and is used to trick people into downloading and/or installing unwanted apps with regular software.
Typically, information about the inclusion of additionally-included apps (offers to download and/or install them) can be found in options such as "Custom", "Advanced", and so on, however, people often download and install software without checking these settings - by leaving them unchanged, they agree by default with offers included in the setup.
Unwanted downloads and installations can also be caused by clicking deceptive ads that run certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Do not download or install software through unofficial or untrustworthy websites, Peer-to-Peer networks such as torrent clients, eMule, various third party downloaders, installers, and so on. Download files and programs only from official websites. Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings included in download and installation setups.
These often contain offers to download and install PUAs - decline these offers before completing any downloads or installations. Avoid clicking ads that are displayed on dubious web pages, since they often lead to untrustworthy websites or cause download/installation of unwanted applications.
Remove any unknown, unwanted extensions, add-ons or plug-ins installed on the browser. The same applies to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with CERX, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
