Prevent TV Now from hijacking your browser
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is TV Now?
TV Now is a browser hijacker, advertised as a tool for easy access to TV streaming sites, accompanied by a fake search engine (search.tvnowapptab.com). Due to most users installing it unintentionally, it is classified as a PUA (potentially unwanted application).
As a browser hijacker, it has the ability to modify browsers, endorse its fake search engine and track browsing activity.
The most popular browsers (e.g. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer) are the common targets of browser hijackers. They change certain settings within browsers (homepage, new tab/window URL and default search engine) to promote their web search tools and/or cause redirection chains.
Trying to use a fake search engine often ends with redirection to a legitimate search engine (e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing and etc.). TV Now changes these settings into search.tvnowapptab.com; attempting to use it culminated in a redirect to search.yahoo.com.
Using a hijacked browser is an exasperating experience, as every new tab/window opened and every single search query typed into the URL bar ends in redirection. While these modifications may appear as easily reversible, access to certain settings can be limited or outright denied.
Without removal of the actual hijacking application, recovering the affected browser is impossible. TV Now can also gather vulnerable data. By monitoring browsing habits (pages viewed, websites visited and search engine history), it can gather personal information (IP address, geolocation and real-life user identity details).
This accumulated data is then passed onto third parties (potentially, cyber criminals), seeking to misuse it in order to create profit. TV Now is frequently spread alongside the Hide My Searches app - also classified as a PUA.
Presence of rogue applications within devices can result in various browser and system invasions/infections, as well as lead to serious privacy issues (even identity theft). To ensure device and user safety, all dubious apps and/or browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately.

Most PUAs are similar, some are even identical. Radio Now, Forms Hub App, Get TV Easy and many other browser hijackers are analogous to TV Now. While the features they offer may differ, their mode of operation does not. Designed for maximum legitimacy, these applications advertise a variety of "useful" and "advantageous" features.
However, they rarely operate as promised, if they are functional at all. PUAs serve but one purpose - to generate revenue for their developers, aside from that they are useless.
They modify browsers, cause redirects to sale-oriented, compromised and even malignant websites, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (pop-ups, coupons, banners, etc.) and track sensitive information.
How did TV Now install on my computer?
PUAs can be either installed by users themselves or without their knowledge. TV Now can be downloaded from its official website. Unwanted apps can also be installed together with desired software. "Bundling" is a false marketing technique, by which regular programs are bundled with PUAs.
By rushing through the installation process (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps, using pre-set options and similar), users can end up inadvertently allowing undesirable applications into their devices. Intrusive advertisements can also further PUAs, by executing scripts to download/install them, without user consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to always use official and verified sources for all software downloads (preferably, through direct download links). P2P (peer-to-peer) sharing networks and other third party downloaders are deemed untrustworthy, as they are more likely to offer bundled programs.
It is strongly advised to read installation terms and explore possible options, to make sure that there is no foul play involved. Using "Custom/Advanced" installation settings and opting-out/declining additional apps/features - is likewise recommended. Users should avoid suspicious websites and advertisements.
The latter is doubly important, as intrusive adverts tend to look utterly ordinary. However, a telltale sign of an invasive ad can be the more evidently unreliable websites it redirects to (e.g. pornography, adult-dating, gambling and similar).
After encounter with ads/redirects of this kind, users should inspect their system and remove all suspect applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with TV Now, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
