Uninstall MovieBox from your browser
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MovieBox?
MovieBox is advertised as an app that allows users to access various movie-related sites directly from a new browser tab. This app changes browser settings to promote a fake search engine (feed.moviebox-online.com) and collects various user-system information.
Apps of this type are termed browser hijackers and potentially unwanted apps (PUAs), since people often download and install them unintentionally.
After installation, MovieBox assigns the address of the homepage, default search engine, and new tab options to feed.moviebox-online.com. People who have their browsers hijacked by MovieBox are thus forced to visit this web address when they open a browser (new window), new tab, or search via the URL bar (enter search queries).
Typically, browser hijackers prevent users from changing the appointed settings by immediately reassigning them if attempts are made to modify the options. To undo, change, or modify these settings, users must uninstall the browser hijacker that is causing the issue.
Note that feed.moviebox-online.com is the address of a fake search engine. If used, this site redirects to search.yahoo.com and generates no unique results - it simply provides results generated by Yahoo. Search engines that behave in this manner are useless.
Furthermore, most browser hijackers and fake search engines collect details such as users' IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of opened pages, entered search queries, and so on. Some hijackers might also record personal details. Developers share the details with other parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse private data to generate revenue.

Browser hijackers are all very similar: they promote fake search engines and are used by developers to generate revenue.
Typically, these apps do not function as promised and simply cause problems. PUAs can be the reason behind problems relating to privacy, browsing safety, or even identity theft. To avoid issues, uninstall MovieBox and other PUAs installed on the browser or operating system.
Examples of other browser hijackers are Transit Schedules, Universal Converter, and Simple Package Tracker.
How did MovieBox install on my computer?
PUAs are often installed unintentionally when people click deceptive, intrusive advertisements, or download and install programs. Developers often try to trick people into causing unintentional downloads/installations using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling".
They hide additional (potentially unwanted) software in the download or installation set-ups of other software. In this way, they conceal information about this extra software in setup settings such as "Custom", "Advanced", and so on. Therefore, unintentional downloads and installations are often caused when people leave these settings unchecked and unchanged.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Download programs and files only from official, trustworthy websites. Unofficial websites, third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks such as torrent clients, eMule and other tools or sources should not be trusted.
Check "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of all download or installation setups and dismiss/deselect offers to install/download unwanted apps. Avoid clicking intrusive advertisements, since most will open untrustworthy or even malicious websites, or lead to unwanted downloads/installations.
Remove all unwanted applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) installed on the browser and programs of this type installed on the operating system.
This should stop the browser from opening dubious web pages and showing unwanted ads. If your computer is already infected with MovieBox, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
