Eliminate Your Online Speed Test browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Your Online Speed Test?
As its name suggests, Your Online Speed Test is a tool that supposedly allows users to test their internet performance online. It apparently provides quick access to popular performance testing websites directly from a new browser window or tab.
In fact, Your Online Speed Test is a browser hijacker, a potentially unwanted application (PUA) that changes browser settings to promote a dubious (fake) search engine and collects data relating to users' browsing habits.
When a browser hijacker is installed, it changes the default search engine, homepage, and address of a new tab. Your Online Speed Test sets them to search.hyouronlineperformancetestpro.com, a fake search engine which provides results generated by Yahoo. When a search query is entered, it redirects users to search.yahoo.com.
Search engines such as search.hyouronlineperformancetestpro.com are useless. People who have the Your Online Speed Test app installed on their systems are forced to visit search.hyouronlineperformancetestpro.com when they open a browser (new window), new tab, or enter a search query into the URL bar.
Typically, browser hijackers prevent users from undoing any of the newly appointed settings - the only way to achieve this is to uninstall the app that has hijacked the browser. PUAs should be uninstalled immediately to avoid information tracking.
These apps gather information such as IP addresses, URLs of opened websites, entered search queries, geolocations, and other, possibly sensitive, data. Developers of PUAs send the information to other parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue.

Browser hijackers (and other PUAs) are usually advertised as trustworthy and useful apps, however, apps that promote fake search engines and track data cause problems with online privacy, browsing safety, and even identity theft. To avoid any possible problems caused by PUAs, uninstall them immediately.
Examples of other apps that have similar operation as Your Online Speed Test are Weather Forecaster Pro, Free Live Radio, and Your Free PDF Converter Now Pro.
How did Your Online Speed Test install on my computer?
Most users install PUAs such as Your Online Speed Test accidentally. Typically, this happens when unwanted software is included into the setups of other software. This method is called "bundling". Developers inject PUAs into various download and installation set-ups and hide related information in "Custom", "Advanced", "Manual", and other similar parts.
People who install and download programs without checking these settings often cause more than one unwanted download or installation. PUAs can also be downloaded and installed through intrusive ads - if clicked, some ads execute scripts that start to download or even install unwanted applications.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Do not download files or programs from dubious, unofficial pages, through various downloaders, Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule), and so on. Download them from official sites and use direct download links.
Additionally, do not use third party installers. Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other available options of any download or installation setup, and deselect unwanted apps (if included). Remember, most intrusive ads (especially if shown on dubious pages) lead to other untrustworthy, potentially malicious websites.
Furthermore, they might also lead to unwanted downloads or installations. If the default browser displays unwanted ads or causes redirects to dubious web pages, it might be hijacked by a PUA. Remove/uninstall all suspicious extensions, add-ons or plug-ins that are installed on the browser, and programs installed on the operating system.
If your computer is already infected with Your Online Speed Test, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
