How to eliminate the Document Converter browser-hijacking application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Document Converter?
Document Converter is a deceptive application that supposedly allows conversion of various document formats. Its appearance suggests that this application is legitimate and useful, however, Document Converter is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) and a browser hijacker.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without users' consent; 2) promotion of a fake search engine, and; 3) tracking of browsing activity.
Document Converter promotes the search.hdocumentconverter.app fake search engine by hijacking browsers and assigning the new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options to this address (search.hdocumentconverter.app).
These changes may seem insignificant, however, users are unable to revert them - Document Converter prevents users from accessing these options, or simply reassigns them whenever attempts are made to change them. Ultimately, users are forced to visit search.hdocumentconverter.app when they open a new browser tab or search via the URL bar.
This significantly diminishes the browsing experience. Note that search.hdocumentconverter.app is a useless search engine, since it does not generate any unique results. It simply redirects users to search.yahoo.com when a search query is entered.
Thus, users simply end up searching via Yahoo (a legitimate search engine) and search.hdocumentconverter.app becomes redundant. Another significant downside is information tracking.
Browser-hijacking applications and fake search engines usually record IP addresses, website URLs visited, web pages viewed, search queries, and other similar information relating to browsing habits. Collected data typically includes personal details that developers share with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
These people generate revenue by misusing private information. Therefore, information tracking might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Remove the Document Converter browser hijacker and do NOT open search.hdocumentconverter.app

Document Converter's developers have released dozens of browser-hijacking applications, all of which are identical. Smart Search, Transit Maps Directions, and Get Recipes Now are just some examples from many. All offer "useful features", however, these claims are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy to trick users to install.
Applications such as Document Converter have just one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. Therefore, rather than giving any real value for regular users, these browser hijackers cause unwanted redirects and gather information.
How did Document Converter install on my computer?
This browser hijacker has an official download website, however, it often infiltrates computers without users' consent, since developers proliferate it using intrusive advertising and "bundling" methods. Intrusive advertisements (most of which are delivered by adware-type apps) redirect users to dubious websites and execute scripts to download/install PUAs.
"Bundling", on the other hand, is stealth installation of third party applications together with regular software. Developers hide "bundled" apps behind "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes.
Through lack of knowledge of these threats and careless behavior, many users often rush download/installation processes and skip steps. This often leads to inadvertent installation of third party programs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Therefore, pay attention when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software. Study each window of the download/installation dialogs using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Opt-out of all additionally-included programs and decline offers to download/install them.
Download programs from official sources only and, if possible, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers are typically monetized using the "bundling" method, and thus these tools should not be used.
Bear in mind that intrusive advertisements usually seem legitimate, however, once clicked, they redirect to dubious websites (gambling, pornography, adult dating, and similar). In you experience these ads/redirects, remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
If your computer is already infected with Document Converter, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
