Torlock.com POP-UP Suspicious Website
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is torlock[.]com?
torlock[.]com is a popular, yet dubious, torrent website. On initial appearance, torlock[.]com may seem legitimate and useful, however, this site asks each user to "enable notifications", which would allow it to display browser notifications and promote other websites.
This functionality is legitimate, and thousands of other legitimate websites (e.g., YouTube, Facebook, etc.) use it, however, dubious websites often use notifications to promote other malicious sites. Furthermore, using torrent sites can lead to various system infections.
As mentioned above, torlock[.]com asks users to enable web notifications so that it can promote various content. By enabling them, users grant websites permission to deliver pop-up windows and promote certain content, even the website itself is not opened.
When used legitimately, this function is useful for web developers who inform users about useful/relevant content (e.g., YouTube uses this function to notify users when subscribed channels post new content), however, developers of malicious sites often misuse this function to promote dubious websites.
The volume of displayed notifications is excessive, which significantly diminishes the browsing experience and reduces computer performance. Furthermore, the promoted sites are often malicious. Therefore, clicking on pop-up notifications delivered by websites such as torlock[.]com might lead to high-risk system infections.
The same applies to using torrent sites. Be aware that cyber criminals often use Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks (such as torrents) to proliferate malware. They achieve this by presenting malicious executables as legitimate software, thereby tricking users into manual download/installation of malware.
We strongly recommend that you avoid using torrent websites, unless you are certain that the site is legitimate and the content is virus-free. We also advise you to avoid visiting the torlock[.]com website. If you are redirected to this site without your consent, there is a high probability that your computer is infected with an adware-type application.

As mentioned, the notification display feature is legitimate, however, thousands of rogue websites misuse this function to push dubious (potentially malicious) content. Some examples include fortorsarrabse.info, press2continue.com, and lalittandkedsi.info. Most of these websites are promoted using adware-type applications.
These apps stealthily infiltrate computers and start force-opening new browser tabs/windows and redirecting users to dubious sites.
Apps of this type are also likely to deliver intrusive advertisements and gather information relating to browsing activity. Adware-type applications significantly diminish the browsing experience and pose a significant threat to your privacy/computer safety.
How did adware install on my computer?
Some potentially unwanted applications are free for anyone to download on their official websites, however, most are distributed using intrusive advertisements (coupons, banners, pop-ups, etc.) and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling".
Intrusive advertisements infect computers by redirecting to malicious websites or executing scripts designed to download/install rogue apps. "Bundling" is stealth installation of third party applications with regular software. Developers know that users often rush download/installation processes and skip steps.
Therefore, all "bundled" apps are hidden behind various sections (e.g., "Custom/Advanced" settings) of the download/installation processes. Furthermore, many users carelessly rush these procedures, skip steps, and click advertisements, often leading to inadvertent installation of PUAs.
In this way, users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, be very cautious when browsing the internet and downloading/installing software. Bear in mind that intrusive advertisements usually seem legitimate, since developers invest many resources into their design. In fact, these ads often lead to pornography, adult dating, gambling, surveys, and other similar sites.
If you encounter these ads/redirects, immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins. Furthermore, carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Opt-out of additionally-included programs and decline offers to download/install PUAs.
Software should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links.
Third party downloaders/installers often include rogue apps, and thus these tools should never be used. The key to computer safety is caution. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
