Search.pdftycoon.com Redirect (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is search.pdftycoon.com?
search.pdftycoon.com is a fake search engine that is virtually identical to search.yadbazelet.com, search.elifaint.com, search.fegline.com and many others of this type. Developers promote this site using an adware-type potentially unwanted app (PUA) called PDF Tycoon.
This app (and its associated fake search engine) collects data relating to users' browsing habits and modifies browser settings.
Generally, browser-hijacking apps are installed on browsers such as Google Chrome, Safari, and Mozilla Firefox. Once installed, this PUA adjusts the infiltrated browser's settings. In this case, it assigns the default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL address to search.pdftycoon.com and ensures that none of these settings can be reverted.
Therefore, people with browsers hijacked by this adware-type app are forced to visit search.pdftycoon.com when they search (enter a search query into the URL bar) and open browser windows (or new tabs in them). These modifications cannot be changed unless PDF Tycoon is uninstalled. Adware-type ads display coupons, banners surveys, pop-ups, and so on.
Furthermore, they display them using tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, they conceal underlying content of visited websites. When clicked, they open dubious (potentially, malicious) websites.
Furthermore, search.pdftycoon.com and PDF Tycoon collect data that includes search queries, IP addresses, geo-locations, URLs of visited websites, and so on. Unwanted apps of this type (and associated fake search engines) often collect sensitive/personal details that are shared with third parties who misuse private data to generate revenue.
Some of these third parties might be cyber criminals. Therefore, do not use dubious search engines or have potentially unwanted apps installed.
Name | search.pdftycoon.com browser hijacker |
Threat Type | Mac malware, Mac virus |
Symptoms | Your Mac became slower than normal, you see unwanted pop-up ads, you get redirected to shady websites. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers, torrent file downloads. |
Damage | Internet browsing tracking (potential privacy issues), displaying of unwanted ads, redirects to shady websites, loss of private information. |
Malware Removal (Mac) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your Mac with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
Generally, developers present these search engines (or apps that are used to distribute them) as legitimate and useful, however, these are merely attempts to trick people into using them. Neither PUAs nor fake search engines deliver the features promised, tools, or any other functionality. On the contrary, they cause various problems (browsing safety, privacy issues, and so on).
How did search.pdftycoon.com install on my computer?
PUAs are generally installed unintentionally (though some have websites from which they can be downloaded). Developers promote them using the "bundling" method - they include them within the download or installation set-ups of other software.
Information regarding the inclusion of PUAs in these set-ups is not properly disclosed - developers hide them in "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings. Note, however, that users often cause unwanted installations/downloads when they rush the procedure without checking available settings and leave them unchanged.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Download software from official websites and using direct links. Do not use unofficial/dubious websites, third party downloaders, Peer-to-Peer networks, or other dubious channels. Check all "Custom" or "Advanced" and other options of the download or installation steps. Also check any available checkboxes.
Deselect offers to download or install unwanted apps and only then finish the process. Note that advertisements displayed on dubious websites often lead to other websites of this kind such as pornography, adult dating, gambling, and so on. Furthermore, if you experience unwanted redirects or ads, PUAs might be installed on your browser or operating system.
If this is the case, check the list of installed extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins (on the browser) and remove all unwanted apps immediately. The same applies to the programs/apps installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
