JC Media Player Adware (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is JC Media Player?
JC Media Player is a deceptive application presented as a high quality audio/video player. Its appearance suggests that JC Media Player is legitimate and useful, but it is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) and adware, since developers proliferate it using intrusive advertising and "bundling" methods.
Research shows that JC Media Player infiltrates systems without users’ permission, delivers intrusive advertisements, and gathers various information.
After successful system infiltration, JC Media Player deploys intrusive advertisements (pop-ups, banners, coupons, etc.) using tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, they are likely to conceal underlying content, significantly diminishing the browsing experience.
Intrusive advertisements can redirect to malicious websites and execute scripts that download and install unwanted applications/malware. Therefore, even a single accidental click might result in high-risk computer infections. Adware-type applications such as JC Media Player are also notorious for information tracking.
These apps typically record IP addresses, website URLs visited, search queries, pages viewed, and other data relating to web browsing habits. This information usually includes personal details that developers sell to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who continue to misuse private information to generate revenue.
Therefore, having a data-tracking app such as JC Media Player installed on your computer might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you experience suspicious redirects, uninstall all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.

JC Media Player belongs to the InstallCore adware family and is identical to Elite Video Converter, MM Unzip, PDF Mac Master, and a number of other apps. In fact, all adware is very similar.
These applications offer 'useful features', but few provide any real value. Unwanted apps typically have just one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. In most cases, adware simply delivers intrusive advertisements and gathers information, thereby posing a direct threat to your privacy and browsing safety.
How did JC Media Player install on my computer?
Research shows that, although JC Media Player has an official download website, it is likely to infiltrate systems without permission, since developers proliferate it using intrusive advertisements and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of third party apps together with regular software/apps).
Developers do not adequately disclose installation of unwanted applications. They are hidden within "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes.
Furthermore, many users rush download/installation processes, skip steps, and click advertisements without understanding the possible consequences. This behavior can result in inadvertent installation of potentially unwanted applications such as JC Media Player.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, be very cautious when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software. In most cases, intrusive advertisements seem legitimate and useful, since developers invest many resources into their design, however, most lead to dubious websites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, etc.).
If you experience these ads, immediately remove all dubious applications and browser plug-ins. Carefully analyze each download/installation step and opt-out of additionally-included applications. Download applications from official sources only, using direct download links, since developers monetize third party downloaders/installers by "bundling" rogue apps.
The key to computer safety is caution. If your computer is already infected with JC Media Player, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
