MM Unzip Adware (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MM Unzip?
Developers present MM Unzip as a great tool to archive and extract files. Its appearance suggests that MM Unzip is legitimate and useful, however, it often infiltrates systems without users’ permission. Furthermore, MM Unzip displays intrusive ads and gathers sensitive information. For these reasons, it is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted application (PUA).
Immediately after infiltration, MM Unzip delivers coupon, banner, pop-up, and other similar advertisements. These are delivered using tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any visited website. This causes intrusive ads to conceal underlying content, thereby diminishing the browsing experience.
In addition, they can lead to dubious websites and execute scripts that download and install malware. Therefore, clicking them is risky and can result in computer infections. As with most adware, MM Unzip gathers information relating to web browsing habits.
Furthermore, IP addresses, search queries, URLs visited, pages viewed, and other recorded information usually includes personal details that are shared with third parties and misused to generate revenue.
Thus, the presence of a data-tracking application such as MM Unzip might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We recommend that you uninstall this unwanted application immediately.

MM Unzip belongs to the InstallCore adware family and is thus identical to a number of other adware-type apps, such as Snap Media Player, RadioSpot, NG Player, etc. In fact, all adware-type applications are very similar. By offering 'useful features', PUAs attempt to give the impression of legitimacy and trick users to install.
Their only purpose is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any value for regular users, apps such as MM Unzip cause unwanted redirects and gather sensitive information, thereby posing a direct threat to your privacy and web browsing safety.
How did MM Unzip install on my computer?
Although MM Unzip has an official download website, it often infiltrates systems without permission, since developers proliferate it using intrusive advertising and "bundling" (stealth installation of third party apps with regular software) methods.
Developers hide "bundled" apps within various sections (in most cases, "Custom" and "Advanced" settings) of the download/installation processes.
Furthermore, many users often rush these procedures and skip steps. In addition, they click advertisements without understanding the possible consequences, thus exposing their systems to risk of various infections and compromising their privacy. This behavior can lead to inadvertent installation of potentially unwanted applications such as MM Unzip.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Lack of knowledge and careless behavior are the main reasons for computer infections - caution is the key to safety. Pay close attention when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software. Select "Custom/Advanced" options and observe all download/installation steps. Decline offers to download/install third party apps and deselect those already included.
Avoid using third party downloaders/installers, since developers monetize them by promoting ("bundling") rogue apps. Software should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links. Furthermore, intrusive ads typically seem legitimate, but most lead to untrustworthy websites, such as gambling, pornography, adult dating, and similar.
If you experience these redirects, remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions. If your computer is already infected with MM Unzip, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
