Special-promotions.online POP-UP Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is special-promotions.online?
Virtually identical to n1cely.com, ads.diamonds, adhunter.media, and many others, special-promotions.online is a rogue site designed to redirect visitors to other untrustworthy websites. Users do not generally visit this site intentionally - they are redirected to it by potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
Typically, users install these applications inadvertently. Most PUAs cause redirects to untrustworthy websites, deliver online advertisements, and collect information.
Once a potentially unwanted program is installed, it forces browsers to randomly open new tabs/windows and causes redirects to special-promotions.online. From here, users are redirected to other (typically two or three) untrustworthy websites, at least one of which will contain malicious content that could cause high-risk computer infections.
Information tracking is another negative aspect. Most PUAs collect data (IP addresses, geo-locations, keystrokes, URLs of visited websites, search queries, etc.) for their developers who generate revenue by sharing it with third parties (potentially cyber criminals). Furthermore, some of this information might contain personal or sensitive details.
This misuse of data can result in various privacy issues, problems with browsing safety, or even and identity theft. Most PUAs are programmed to deliver advertisements (coupons, banners, surveys, etc.) displayed via tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site and conceal underlying content.
This significantly diminishes the browsing experience. Furthermore, these ads often lead to untrustworthy websites that might be designed to execute scripts that download and install potentially unwanted applications (possibly, malware).
Some PUAs also affect computer performance by running background tasks that misuse computer resources. We recommend that you uninstall all installed PUAs immediately.

Most potentially unwanted applications share similarities - they generate revenue by collecting information, deliver unwanted/intrusive ads, and cause unwanted redirects. PUAs developers offer "useful" tools, however, these offers are simply attempts to give the impression of legitimacy and trick users into downloading their software. Few PUAs provide the functionality promised (or any other value).
How did adware install on my computer?
Potentially unwanted applications can often be found on their official websites and downloaded from there, however, as mentioned above, most PUAs are installed unintentionally together with regular software when software developers use a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Bundling is used to trick users into stealth installation of PUAs.
Typically, the presence of bundled applications is not properly disclosed - software developers hide PUAs in "Custom", "Advanced", "Manual" and other settings of the installation processes. In summary, PUAs are usually installed when users skip installation steps without carefully checking options, and sometimes when they click dubious advertisements.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Be patient during the software installation processes. Do not skip installation steps without checking all available settings/options (the "Custom", "Advanced" and other sections). Opt-out of additionally-included software, and only then proceed to the next step or complete the installation. Use only official and trustworthy sources, and direct links to download software.
Avoid using third party software downloaders or torrents (many third party downloaders will install PUAs together with your chosen software). Bear in mind that intrusive ads often seem legitimate, but they might redirect you to other untrustworthy sites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, etc.).
If an ad causes this type of redirect, immediately close the website and check installed plug-ins, extensions, and add-ons, and programs on your browser and computer. If you find any suspicious entries, remove them immediately. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
