Adhunter.media POP-UP Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is adhunter.media?
Like most rogue websites (such as notification-browser.com, crtmatix.com, artnewsupdate.info, etc.), adhunter.media is designed to redirect visitors to various other dubious/untrustworthy sites. Users generally arrive at adhinter.media unintentionally - they are redirected to it by potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) that are installed without their knowledge.
Negative aspects of PUAs include: unwanted redirects, intrusive advertisements, and data recording.
When installed, potentially unwanted applications force browsers to open adhunter.media in a new browser window or tab. It then triggers additional redirects (about 2-3) to other potentially malicious and untrustworthy sites, at least one of which will contain malicious content that might cause high-risk computer infections.
Furthermore, many PUAs also deliver intrusive ads delivered in the form of coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups, and so on. These are displayed using tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site and conceal underlying content.
They are annoying and once clicked, often redirect users to untrustworthy websites or run scripts that download and install other potentially unwanted/malicious applications. Furthermore, PUA developers generate revenue by collecting and sharing data (such as geo-locations, search queries, keystrokes, visited websites, IP addresses, and so on).
Gathered data might also include personally identifiable/sensitive information that is shared with cyber criminals. These actions can lead to privacy/browsing safety issues or even identity theft. Once installed, some PUAs run background tasks, thereby affecting computer performance. We strongly recommend that you uninstall these applications immediately.

There are many potentially unwanted applications available on the Internet. Most are identical, or at least very similar. PUAs developers offer supposedly useful tools/features and promote them as legitimate apps. In fact, these applications deliver no real value for regular users and are designed only to generate revenue by performing dubious actions.
How did adware install on my computer?
Although potentially unwanted applications often have official download websites, most are installed through intrusive advertisements or when developers use a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - installation of potentially unwanted applications with regular software.
Software developers tend not to disclose information about these installations properly - they hide PUAs in "Advanced", "Custom" and other parts of the installation processes. Furthermore, many users skip installation steps without paying attention to the details. This is how they are tricked into installing potentially unwanted applications.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Avoid downloading software using untrustworthy, unknown/unofficial, and other dubious sources. Also avoid torrents and third party downloaders. We recommend that you use direct links and trustworthy websites only. Check "Custom"/"Advanced" and other options/settings when installing software, especially if it is free.
Deselect all unwanted offers to install PUAs and only then finish the installation. Browse the web with care - bear in mind that many ads may seem legitimate, but they are often dubious.
If you clicked an ad and were redirected to an untrustworthy website (pornography, gambling, adult dating, etc.), close it and check your browser for any suspicious plug-ins, add-ons, and extensions. Also check the list of installed programs on your computer. Uninstall all dubious entries immediately.
If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
