CouponRockstar Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is CouponRockstar?
CouponRockstar is a deceptive application that supposedly saves time and money by providing shopping coupons and notifications of special deals/discounts in various e-shops. These application may seem legitimate and useful, however, CouponRockstar is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) and adware.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without users' consent; 2) tracking of web browsing activity, and; 3) display of intrusive advertisements.
CouponRockstar records user-system information relating to browsing activity. The list of collected data types includes (but is not limited to) Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, keystrokes, queries entered into search engines, and other similar information that often includes personal details.
Furthermore, the data is shared with third parties who misuse personal details to generate revenue. Therefore, the presence of a data-tracking app such as CouponRockstar can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. As mentioned above, this app also delivers intrusive advertisements.
Coupons, banners, pop-ups, and other ads are delivered using tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any visited website.
They often conceal underlying content, thereby diminishing the browsing experience. Furthermore, intrusive ads can lead to malicious websites and run scripts that download/install malware. Therefore, even a single accidental click can result in high-risk system infections. We strongly recommend that you uninstall this application immediately.

There are hundreds of adware-type apps virtually identical to CouponRockstar including HidenGate, Amazon Shopping Assistant, TigerTrade, and SystemNanoPacks - these are just some examples from many.
These applications often claim to be legitimate and useful (they promote 'useful features'), however, adware is designed only to generate revenue for the developers and delivers no real value for regular users. These apps gather information and deploy ads, thereby posing a direct threat to your browsing safety and privacy.
How did CouponRockstar install on my computer?
Although CouponRockstar has an official download website, it often infiltrates systems without users' consent, since developers proliferate this adware using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" and the aforementioned intrusive advertisements. "Bundling" is stealth installation of potentially unwanted applications together with regular (typically free) software.
Developers hide "bundled" apps within "Custom/Advanced' settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes, however, the main issue is that users often rush these procedures and skip steps. In addition, they often click advertisements and skip steps. In doing so, they expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent adware infiltration, be very cautious when downloading/installing software and browsing the Internet. Carefully analyze each step of the download/installation processes and opt-out of additionally-included programs.
Download programs from official sources only using direct download links - third party downloaders/installers often include rogue apps, and thus these tools should not be used. Bear in mind that intrusive ads might seem legitimate, but they often lead to dubious sites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, and so on).
If you experience these redirects, eliminate all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins. The main reasons for computer infections are poor knowledge and careless behavior. Caution is the key to safety. If your computer is already infected with CouponRockstar, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this adware.
