Appoftheroad.com POP-UP Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is appoftheroad.com?
appoftheroad.com is another rogue website virtually identical to kaymopk.com, go.leadgid.ru, lawsivo.ru, and many others.
This website is designed to cause redirects to other untrustworthy sites. Users mostly visit appoftheroad.com inadvertently - they are redirected to it by potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). Additionally, most PUPs track information, run various background tasks, and deliver intrusive ads.
Once installed, this potentially unwanted program opens new browser windows/tabs and redirects users to appoftheroad.com, which then redirects to even more (about 2-3) untrustworthy sites, at least one of which will contain malicious content. Visiting these websites can cause high-risk computer infections.
PUPs also deploy intrusive ads (banners, coupons, pop-ups, surveys, and so on) that are displayed via tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site (and conceal underlying content).
These ads can diminish the browsing experience, and once clicked, redirect users to potentially malicious websites or even execute scripts that download and install other potentially unwanted programs.
Furthermore, most potentially unwanted programs collect user-system information, such as IP addresses, visited websites, search queries, keystrokes, geo-locations, etc. It is possible that some of the gathered data will contain personally identifiable or other sensitive information that is shared with third parties (potentially cyber criminals) and used to generate revenue.
Information tracking can lead to privacy issues and even identity theft. Furthermore, some PUPs run various background processes that can affect computer performance. Therefore, your system might become much slower. We advise you to remove/uninstall all potentially unwanted programs immediately.

There are many potentially unwanted programs available and most serve an identical purpose: to generate revenue by tracking data, causing unwanted redirects, and providing intrusive ads.
Developers offer "useful features", however, most of these programs do not deliver the functionality promised or give any real value for regular users. These offers are merely attempts to trick users into downloading potentially unwanted programs.
How did adware install on my computer?
Potentially programs can be downloaded from official websites, however, most users download and install them inadvertently. PUPs are generally installed through intrusive ads or when software developers 'bundle' them with other software. Bundling is a deceptive marketing method used to stealthily install potentially unwanted programs together with other regular software.
These programs are usually hidden in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar parts of the installation processes. As a rule, these installations are not properly disclosed and users thus install PUPs inadvertently. In most cases, this happens when users skip installation steps and leave default installation settings unchanged.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To avoid installation of potentially unwanted programs, download software using official and trustworthy sources only. Avoid using third party software downloaders/installers and torrents to download or install software, since they are often monetized by promoting potentially unwanted software.
Be careful when installing software - analyze each step attentively, check "Custom"/"Advanced" settings and options, and decline any unwanted offers. Avoid clicking intrusive ads (mentioned earlier). They may appear legitimate, but once clicked, they can redirect you to untrustworthy websites such as gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.
If you are redirected to one of these websites, close it immediately and check your browser for any unwanted extensions, plug-ins, and add-ons, and remove unwanted entries immediately.
The same applies to the programs installed on your computer. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
