Appdatum.com POP-UP Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is appdatum.com?
Identical to datsadstrack.com, karonty.com, click-now-on.me, and many others, appdatum.com is a rogue website designed to redirect visitors to various other untrustworthy sites.
Potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) are responsible for redirects to this site, since users do not often visit it willingly. PUPs are usually installed inadvertently, and then go on to collect data, deliver intrusive ads, and misuse system resources.
Once installed, this potentially unwanted program triggers browsers to open new tabs (or windows) and forces users to visit the appdatum.com website. From here, visitors are redirected to other (about 2-3) untrustworthy websites that are likely to contain malicious content. When visited, they can cause high-risk computer infections.
Furthermore, PUPs are known to collect user information including geo-locations, IP addresses, search queries, visited websites, keystrokes, and so on. It is possible that the data will contain sensitive or personally-identifiable information that is shared with third parties (potentially cyber criminals) to generate revenue.
These actions can lead to privacy issues or even identity theft. Potentially unwanted programs also deliver intrusive ads (coupons, banners, pop-ups, surveys etc.), usually displayed via tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site (and conceal underlying content).
Do not click these ads, since they tend to redirect to potentially malicious sites or even execute scripts that download and install potentially unwanted/malicious programs. Furthermore, PUPs are able to run background tasks (for example cryptocurrency mining) that can reduce computer performance. You are advised to remove these programs immediately.

All potentially unwanted programs serve an identical purpose - to generate revenue (by delivering intrusive ads, collecting and sharing information, and causing unwanted redirects). Most offer "useful" tools, however, few PUPs provide the functionality promised or give any real value for regular users.
How did PUPs install on my computer?
You can download PUPs from official websites, however, they are often installed inadvertently via intrusive ads or when software developers use the "bundling" method. Bundling is a deceptive marketing method to stealthily install potentially unwanted programs with other regular software. Bundled software (PUPs) is usually hidden in "Custom" , "Advanced", and other similar sections of then installation processes. In summary, developers do not disclose these installations properly and, by skipping installation steps without studying them, many users inadvertently allow PUPs to be installed.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To keep your computer safe from these installations, download software from official sources and using direct links. Avoid using third party software downloaders (or installers), torrents, and so on. Install software carefully - analyze each installation step and check "Custom", "Advanced", and other similar settings/options.
Make sure that you decline all unwanted offers before completing the installation. Be cautious when browsing the web - avoid clicking on intrusive ads, even if they appear legitimate. Cyber criminals invest time and money into their design so that they appear legitimate, and developers could trick users into clicking them.
These ads might redirect to gambling, pornography, adult dating, and other similar websites. If you have clicked one of these ads and were redirected to a similar website, close the opened window or tab and check for suspicious entries on your web browser (extensions, plug-ins, pop-ups) and programs on your computer.
If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
