Codeonclick.com Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is codeonclick.com?
Identical to venturead.com, adsbtrack.com, kd2244.com, and many others, codeonclick.com is a rogue website that redirects to other suspicious sites. Furthermore, users often visit codeonclick.com inadvertently - they are redirected by various potentially unwanted programs (PUPs).
These applications infiltrate systems without consent (the "bundling" method), deliver intrusive online advertisements, and continually gather user-system information.
PUPs open a new browsing window and redirect to codeonclick.com, which then immediately redirects to another random site. Most of these random websites are pornographic and often contain malicious content. Therefore, redirects can result in high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, PUPs deliver various intrusive online advertisements including pop-up, banner, and coupons. These conceal underlying content, significantly diminishing the browsing experience. They might also lead to malicious websites - so clicking these ads is risky and can result in further computer infections.
Another downside is information tracking. Research shows that PUPs record various data that might contain personal details including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, geo-locations, mouse/keyboard activity, URLs visited, pages viewed, and search queries.
The collected data is later shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who generate revenue by misusing personal details. Therefore, the presence of data-tracking applications can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, you are advised to uninstall PUPs immediately.
There are hundreds of PUPs, all of which are virtually identical. These applications often claim to provide various 'useful features' (for example, malware removal, computer performance enhancement, improved download performance, file format conversion, etc.), however, PUPs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
Rather than providing any significant value for regular users, they cause unwanted redirects, deliver advertisements, and continually record various user-system information.
How did adware install on my computer?
Developers promote PUPs by employing a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of third party applications with regular software/apps), since they know that users often rush the download/installation processes and skip steps.
Therefore, bundled programs are hidden within the "Custom/Advanced" settings. Skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
PUPs are distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, never rush the download or installation processes. Select the "Custom/Advanced" settings, analyze each step and decline offers to download/install third party applications. Never install bundled software.
