Online Application Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Online Application?
Online Application (online.io by Microleaves) is a rogue application that stealthily infiltrates systems without permission (the "bundling" method).
Following infiltration, this app delivers intrusive online advertisements and continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity. For these reasons, Online Application is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
Following infiltration, Online Application employs a "virtual layer" to deliver pop-up, banner, coupon, and other similar ads. The virtual layer is a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying content of visited websites, significantly diminishing the browsing experience.
In addition, these ads often redirect to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and can lead to further high-risk adware or malware infections. Furthermore, browsing activity is continually tracked, since Online Application records various information that might contain personal details.
The list of collected data types includes (but is not limited to) website URLs visited, pages viewed, queries entered into search engines, and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. Online Application's developers share this information with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse personal details to generate revenue.
Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking app such as Online Application can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Uninstall Online Application adware immediately.
Online Application is virtually identical to Open Plugins, SeekPriv, Cookies Control, Tigers Deal, and hundreds of other adware-type applications. By offering various 'useful features', PUPs often trick users into believing that these apps are legitimate and useful, however, they are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
Apps such as Online Application merely deliver intrusive online advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model) and continually record user-system information (which is later sold to third parties). PUPs are useless for regular users.
How did Online Application install on my computer?
Online Application has an official promotion website, however, developers also distribute it by employing a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of third party applications with regular (usually free) software. Developers hide bundled programs within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings of the download/installation processes.
Many users rush these processes and skip steps, thus exposing their systems to risk of various infections and compromising their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
PUPs are distributed using the "bundling" method. Therefore, installation of these applications can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, carefully observe each download/installation step using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Secondly, decline offers to download/install additional applications and opt-out of those already included. Never install bundled software.
