Plugins Button Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Plugins Button?
Plugins Button is a deceptive application that supposedly provides quick access to browser plug-ins. Initially, Plugins Button may appear legitimate and useful, however, this app is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without consent; 2) display of intrusive online advertisements, and; 3) tracking of users' Internet browsing activity.
Following infiltration, Plugins Button generates pop-up, banner, coupon, and other similar advertisements. To achieve this, developers employ a "virtual layer" - a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying web content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, some lead to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and can result in further adware or malware infections. Furthermore, Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since Plugins Button continually gathers IP addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar information that might contain personal details.
This information is shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse personal details to generate revenue. Therefore, the presence of a data-tracking app such as Plugins Button might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall this app immediately.
Plugins Button shares many similarities with Cookies Control, Cookies On-Off, EZupdater, Tigers Deal, and hundreds of other adware-type applications.
Note that all of these apps offer different functionality, but have identical behavior. Adware-type applications are designed only to generate revenue for the developers and give no significant value for regular users. These apps merely deliver intrusive online advertisements and continually gather various user-system information.
Note - if this adware was installed as "Installed by Enterprise Policy" on your Chrome browser, follow this guide.
How did Plugins Button install on my computer?
Plugins Button has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of third party applications with regular (usually free) software. Users often rush the download/installation processes and skip steps.
Aware of this, developers hide bundled programs within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of rogue applications.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent system infiltration by PUPs, be very cautious when downloading and installing software. Closely analyze each step using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, decline offers to download/install additional applications and opt-out of those already included.
