Cookies On-Off Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Cookies On-Off?
Cookies On-Off is a deceptive application that falsely claims to allow users to turn web browser cookies on and off. Initially, Cookies On-Off may appear legitimate and useful, however, this app is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and a browser hijacker.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without consent; 2) display of intrusive online advertisements, and; 3) tracking of users' browsing activity.
Following infiltration, Cookies On-Off generates pop-up, coupon, banner, and other similar advertisements. To achieve this, developers employ a "virtual layer" - a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying content of visited websites, significantly diminishing the browsing experience.
In addition, these ads might redirect to malicious websites and even accidental clicks can result in high-risk adware or malware infections. Another downside is information tracking. Cookies On-Off records IP addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar information that might contain personal details.
This collected data is shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse personal information to generate revenue - behavior that can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Therefore, uninstall Cookies On-Off adware immediately.
Cookies On-Off is virtually identical to hundreds of other adware-type applications such as AVBoost, WebDiscover, unTabs, and BestZiper. Claims to provide 'valuable functionality' are false. The only purpose of all adware is to generate revenue for the developers, whilst regular users receive no significant value.
Applications such as Cookies On-Off merely deliver intrusive advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model) and continually gather various user-system information (which is later sold to third parties).
Note - if this adware was installed as "Installed by Enterprise Policy" on your Chrome browser, follow this guide.
How did Cookies On-Off install on my computer?
Cookies On-Off is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, developers also distribute it by employing a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Therefore, many users install Cookies On-Off inadvertently, without their consent. "Bundling" is stealth installation of third party applications with regular software/apps.
Developers hide bundled apps within the "Custom/Advanced" settings of the download or installation processes. Skipping this section exposes systems to risk of various infections and compromises users' privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent system infiltration by PUPs, be very cautious when downloading and installing software. Select the "Custom/Advanced" settings and closely analyze each step. Furthermore, decline offers to download/install additional apps and cancel those already included. The key to computer safety is caution.
