CondRed Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is CondRed?
CondRed is a rogue application that stealthily infiltrates systems without consent (the "bundling" method). Following infiltration, CondRed installs the "Google Mail Checker" and "Google Docs Offline" extensions to Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome.
In addition, it continually causes unwanted redirects, delivers intrusive advertisements, and records various user-system information. For these reasons, CondRed is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
CondRed adware uses a "virtual layer" to generate pop-up, banner, and other similar advertisements. This tool enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying website content, significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
There is a high probability that these ads will lead to malicious websites. Clicking them is risky and can result in various computer infections. The virtual layer is also used to cause redirects. CondRed adware opens a new browser tab and redirects to a random website, which might also contain malicious content.
These redirects are also risky. Be aware that users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since CondRed continually records IP addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar information that is later shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
This personal information is often misused to generate revenue. Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking app such as CondRed can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, uninstall CondRed adware immediately.
The Internet is full of adware-type applications similar to CondRed including CloudExtender, Cookies Control, and AVBoost - these are just some examples from many. All claim to enable 'useful functionality', however, these claims are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy.
The only purpose of all adware is to generate revenue for the developers. Apps such as CondRed cause unwanted redirects, deliver intrusive ads, and continually track users' Internet browsing activity.
How did CondRed install on my computer?
To distribute CondRed, developers use a deceptive marketing method called "bundling", since they know that users often rush the download/installation processes and skip steps. They hide bundled programs within the "Custom/Advanced" settings and, thus, skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of rogue applications such as CondRed.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two simple steps you should take to prevent this situation. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - select the "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each step. Secondly, decline offers to download/install additional applications and cancel those already included. The key to computer safety is caution.
