DestinyScope Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is DestinyScope?
Identical to QuizCrystal, DestinyGaze, AstrologyBuzz, and a number of other deceptive applications, DestinyScope is a rogue app that supposedly allows users to solve various quizzes, read horoscopes, and use other similar functions.
These claims often trick users into believing that DestinyScope is a legitimate application, however, this app often infiltrates systems without users' permission.
Furthermore, DestinyScope displays intrusive online advertisements and continually records information relating to users' web browsing activity. For these reasons, DestinyScope is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Following successful infiltration, DestinyScope delivers coupon, banner, pop-up, and other similar advertisements. To achieve this, developers use a 'virtual layer' - a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site.
Since none of the displayed ads originate from visited websites, underlying content is often concealed (significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience). In addition, these ads often lead to malicious websites containing infectious content. Therefore, even accidental clicks can result in high-risk adware or malware infections.
Be aware that DestinyScope gathers various information that might be personally identifiable. Examples include search queries, URLs visited, pages viewed, and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. The data is shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse private data to generate revenue.
This behavior might cause serious privacy issues. Therefore, DestinyScope adware should be uninstalled immediately.
Research shows that all adware-type applications are virtually identical. By falsely claiming to provide 'useful features', apps such as DestinyScope attempt to give the impression of legitimacy. In fact, these apps provide no significant value for regular users - adware is designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
DestinyScope, and other similar applications, merely generate intrusive online advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model) and gather personally identifiable information (which is later shared with third parties to generate revenue).
How did DestinyScope install on my computer?
DestinyScope is free for anyone to download on its official promotion site, however, developers also distribute DestinyScope by employing a deceptive software marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of PUPs with regular software).
Developers know that users often rush the download/installation processes and skip most steps and hide bundled programs within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Thus, users who rush and skip this section often install bogus programs such as DestinyScope inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
PUPs are distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, never rush the download or installation processes. Select the "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each step of these procedures. Furthermore, decline all additionally-included programs. The key to computer safety is caution.
