TechAgent Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is TechAgent?
TechAgent is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that supposedly provides 24/7 computer technician support. Initially, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, due to rogue behavior, TechAgent is classed as adware, since it is likely to infiltrate systems without users’ permission, continually track Internet browsing activity, and deliver various intrusive online advertisements.
TechAgent records Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, and other similar data. This information might include personally identifiable details that developers of TechAgent share with third parties (who misuse private data to generate revenue).
Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking application on your system might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. In addition, TechAgent employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner, coupon, and other similar advertisements, none of which originate from users' visited websites and conceal underlying content.
This significantly diminishes the web browsing experience. Furthermore, displayed advertisements often lead to malicious websites - clicking them risks further high-risk adware or malware infections. Therefore, we strongly advise you to uninstall TechAgent adware immediately.
TechAgent is very similar to hundreds of other adware-type applications including Sports Score, Counterflix, RealTimeLeads, and especially 24x7 Help.
All claim to provide functions to supposedly improve the web browsing experience, however, adware-type programs simply collect personally identifiable information, deliver intrusive online advertisements, and occasionally cause unwanted browser redirects.
The purpose of apps such as TechAgent is to generate revenue for the developers. They are mostly useless for regular users.
How did TechAgent install on my computer?
Adware-type programs are often distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software.
Developers know that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing apps and intentionally conceal PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download/installation processes. Skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of bogus programs such as TechAgent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This situation can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, closely analyze each step of the download/installation processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Secondly, opt-out of all additionally-included programs, decline all offers to download/install third party programs, and never allow set-ups to modify settings that are irrelevant to the installation.
