Rogue Chromium Browsers

What is Chromium?

Chromium is an open-source web browser project. Although Chromium project itself is legitimate, it is often misused as a platform for malicious web browsers categorized as adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUP). Most infiltrate systems without users’ permission.

In addition, these apps continually track Internet browsing activity, generate intrusive advertisements, and cause unwanted browser redirects.

   
InfiniteTear Ransomware

What is InfiniteTear?

InfiniteTear is a ransomware-type virus discovered by malware security researcher, Leo. Once infiltrated, InfiniteTear encrypts stored files and appends their names with the ".JezRoz" extension (for example, "sample.jpg" is renamed to "sample.jpg.JezRoz").

Following successful encryption, InfiniteTear creates a text file ("Important_Read_Me.txt"), placing it in every existing folder. Updated variants of this ransomware use ".Infinite" extension for encrypted files.

What is search.tapufind.com?

search.tapufind.com is another fake Internet search engine that supposedly enhances the web browsing experience by generating improved results. Its appearance barely differs from Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other legitimate search engines. Therefore, many users believe that search.tapufind.com is also legitimate.

Be aware, however, that this site is promoted using a rogue application called Tapufind. This application usually infiltrates systems without users’ permission. Furthermore, Tapufind stealthily modifies web browser settings and gathers information that is likely to contain personal details.

   
Russenger Ransomware

What is Russenger?

First discovered by MalwareHunterTeam, Russenger is a ransomware-type virus that, once infiltrated, encrypts most stored files and appends filenames with the ".messenger-[random_letters_and_digits]" extension. For example, "sample.jpg" might be renamed to a filename such as "sample.jpg.messenger-015a28b6e49721c6".

From this point, using files becomes impossible. Immediately after encryption, Russenger generates a text file ("Инструкция по дешифровке.txt") and places a copy in every existing folder.

boost.ur-search.com is another fake search engine that claims to generate improved results and, therefore, enhance the web browsing experience. Judging on appearance alone, boost.ur-search.com may seem similar to Yahoo, Google, Bing, and other legitimate search engines, and thus many users believe that this site is also legitimate.

In fact, developers promote boost.ur-search.com by employing rogue downloaders/installers designed to modify browser options without permission. Furthermore, boost.ur-search.com continually records information relating to users' Internet browsing activity.

   
THANATOS Ransomware

What is THANATOS?

First discovered by MalwareHunterTeam, THANATOS is a ransomware-type virus. This malware is designed to encrypt most stored files and add the ".THANATOS" extension to the name of each compromised file. For example, "sample.jpg" is renamed to "sample.jpg.THANATOS".

Once files are encrypted, they become unusable. After successfully encrypting files, THANATOS places a text file ("README.txt") on the desktop.
