Browser Security Unwanted Application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Browser Security?
The Browser Security application supposedly improves users' web browsing safety - "Browser Security - Protect yourself against phishing sites!" These claims often trick users to install, however, Browser Security gathers various user/system information.
In addition, this app often installs on computers without users' consent. For these reasons, Browser Security is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Once infiltrated, Browser Security collects various information relating to Internet browsing activity including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, Internet service provider (ISP) websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and cookies.
Some of this collected information might be personally identifiable information and shared with cooperating third party companies, who often misuse private data to generate revenue.
This can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft and is behavior common to potentially unwanted programs that generate intrusive online advertisements. Therefore, Browser Security PUP should be uninstalled immediately.
During research we have located many potentially unwanted programs such as Browser Security. Examples include Goodgame Empire, MyPC Backup, and Ad Stopper. By falsely claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience, apps such as Browser Security attempt to give the impression of legitimate software.
In fact, these apps are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than providing any real value for users, potentially unwanted programs collect personally identifiable information, generate intrusive online advertisements and cause unwanted browser redirects.
How did Browser Security install on my computer?
Browser Security has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' and, thus, users often install this app inadvertently. Bundling is essentially stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software/apps.
Many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software. Aware of this, developers intentionally hide apps such as Browser Security within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download or installation procedures. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of various infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Many PUPs are distributed as bundles and, therefore, it is important to be attentive when downloading and installing software. Closely analyze these procedures using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings and opt-out of all third party apps listed for download/installation.
