Mgid ads generated by adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What are mgid ads?
Mgid is a legitimate advertising network that is not involved in adware development or distribution. Many websites are using these ads to monetize their traffic intentionally. The problem is that this platform is used by various deceptive applications to generate revenue by showing ads curated by this advertising network.
By falsely claiming to enhance the Internet browsing experience, potentially unwanted programs often trick users into believing that they are legitimate and useful, however, the due to their rogue behavior (stealth installation without users' consent, tracking of Internet browsing activity, etc.), applications that generate mgid ads are categorized as potentially unwanted programs (PUP) and adware.
Adware-type applications often generate pop-up, banner, interstitial, transitional, and other similar ads. These advertisements are displayed using a 'virtual layer' and, thus, often conceal underlying web content. This significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, displayed advertisements can lead to malicious sites - clicking them is risky and might cause further adware or malware infections. Furthermore, PUPs often record browsing-related information including IP addresses, website URls visited, pages viewed, search queries, geographic locations, and other similar data.
This data may seem insignificant, however, it could include personal information that is later shared with third party companies (who misuse personal data to generate revenue). Thus, the presence of an information tracking app on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
If you are continually encountering mgid advertisements, uninstall all recently-installed suspicious applications immediately.
Adware-type applications are often very similar. Most give fake promises of providing 'valuable' features, however, these false claims are merely attempts to trick users to install. In fact, none provide the functionality promised after system infiltration. Adware-type programs are designed to generate revenue for the developers while users receive no value.
How did adware install on my computer?
Applications that generate mgid advertisements are often distributed as 'bundles' with other apps. Bundling is essentially stealth installation of third party software with regular software/apps. Developers hide installation of PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings.
Many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software and, therefore, by rushing these processes, they inadvertently install deceptive applications.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Never rush the download or installation processes. Closely analyze each step using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Be aware that additionally-included software is often bogus and, thus, you should never accept offers to download or install third party programs.
