What is Weather Alert?
Weather Alert is presented as a legitimate application that supposedly notifies users of forthcoming storms.
On initial inspection, this functionality might appear legitimate and useful, however, due to its rogue behavior, Weather Alert is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware, since it infiltrates systems without users’ permission. It also generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks Internet browsing activity.
The types of advertisements generated include pop-up/under, in-text, interstitial, and banner ads. Be aware that none originate from users' visited websites and conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, they are likely to redirect to malicious websites containing infectious content - clicking them risks further adware or malware infections. Furthermore, Weather Alert gathers various browsing-related information such as operating system, geographic location, unique identifier numbers, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and so on.
This data is shared with third parties. Some of the collected information might be personally identifiable and shared with third parties who misuse personal data to generate revenue. Thus, the presence of an information-tracking application on your system can lead to serious privacy issues. You are strongly advised to uninstall Weather Alert adware immediately.
This PUP is similar to Storm Alert, Storm Warnings, Current Weather Alert, and hundreds of other adware-type programs also falsely claiming to enhance the Internet browsing experience.
These fake promises are given simply to trick users to install. Following successful infiltration, apps such as Weather Alert merely generate intrusive advertisements and collect personally identifiable information. They are designed to generate revenue for the developers - users receive no real value.
How did Weather Alert install on my computer?
Weather Alert is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, many users install this app inadvertently, since they do not pay enough attention during the download and installation processes. The developers know that users often rush when downloading and installing software and intentionally hide PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings.
Therefore, users who skip these settings often inadvertently installing rogue programs, thereby exposing their systems to risk of further infection and putting their privacy at risk.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of adware-type programs can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, perform the download and installation processes with caution. Closely analyze these procedures. Secondly, never accept any offers to download or install additional software.
All additionally-included applications should be cancelled, since there is a high probability that third party apps will be bogus.
