What is iStreamLite?
iStreamLite is presented as a legitimate application allowing users to download various online streaming videos - "Download streaming videos directly to your desktop".
Initially, this functionality might appear useful, however, be aware that due to its rogue behavior, iStreamLite is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). This application infiltrates systems without users’ permission, generates intrusive online advertisements, and collects information relating to Internet browsing activity.
As with other regular adware, iStreamLite employs a 'virtual layer' to generate revenue by displaying banner, pop-up, and other similar ads. The virtual layer allows developers to place third party graphical content on any websites visited. Many users are unaware that these ads do not originate from their visited sites.
By concealing underlying content, these ads significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, some redirect to malicious sites containing bogus content - clicking them is risky and may lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, iStreamLite gathers information that might contain personally identifiable details including IP addresses, search queries, website URLs visited, pages viewed, and other collected information that is shared with cooperating third party companies.
There is a high probability that personal data will be misused to generate revenue. Thus, the presence of iStreamLite on your system may lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that you to uninstall this PUP immediately.
iStreamLite is similar to hundreds of other PUPs also claiming to enhance the Internet browsing experience. In fact, all adware is designed to generate revenue for the developers.
These applications provide no real value for users. Applications such as iStreamLite generate intrusive online advertisements (using the 'Pay Per Click’ [PPC] advertising model) and track collect personally identifiable information (which is later sold to third party companies).
How did iStreamLite install on my computer?
This PUP is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, many users install this application inadvertently. The developers distribute iStreamLite using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software/apps.
Developers hide these apps within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, since many users do not pay enough attention during the download and installation processes.
Unaware that bogus apps are concealed, they rush these processes and skip most/all steps, thereby inadvertently installing applications such as iStreamLite. In doing so, they expose their systems to risk of further infection and put their privacy at risk.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of iStreamLite and other adware-type programs can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, be attentive during the download and installation processes.
Perform these processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this way all bundled software will be revealed. Furthermore, opt-out of all third party applications listed for download/installation, since bundled programs are often rogue.
