CinemaP Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is CinemaP?
Identical to Cinem Plus, Cinema Plus, Cinema Now, and a number of other apps, CinemaP is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to improve online video quality - "CinemaP - Get a Better Online Video Experience".
CinemaP supposedly improves the Internet browsing experience, and this functionality may seem useful to some users, however, it is categorized as adware. There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without users' permission; 2) display of intrusive online advertisements, and; 3) collection of various Internet browsing-related data.
CinemaP displays various advertisements including (but not limited to) banner, coupon, and price comparison ads. None originate from visited websites and overlay underlying web content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Most ads generated by CinemaP redirect to websites offering certain services, online stores, and other similar e-commerce sites, however, users might also be redirected to malicious websites containing infectious content. There is a high probability that clicking them will cause further adware or malware infections.
The above is achieved using a virtual layer, which allows placement of third party graphical content on visited websites. Furthermore, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since CinemaP gathers various software and hardware information, which (according to the developers) is not personally identifiable.
Despite this statement, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geolocation), website URLs visited, search queries entered into search engines, and pages viewed might indeed contain private details.
Developers share this gathered data with third party companies, and therefore, the presence of CinemaP adware on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft - you are strongly advised to eliminate this adware immediately.
CinemaP's Privacy Policy towards information sharing:
We may share and/or transfer information including personally identifying information internally within our group of companies as well as with government bodies and law enforcement agencies (where lawfully instructed or required), successors in title to the respective business (i.e. if we become involved in any form of merger or acquisition) and to suppliers we engage to process data on our behalf. We may share non personally identifying information (unless specifically indicated otherwise) with third parties, such as trusted suppliers, business partners, advertisers and search engines.
CinemaP is regular adware, and thus, shares similarities with many other applications such as Safe Browsing, Steel Cut, and DesktopClock. These apps offer useful features, and in doing so, often succeed in tricking users to install.
Following infiltration, however, these apps provide none of the functionality promised - their purpose is to generate as much revenue for the developers as possible by displaying intrusive online advertisements (using the 'Pay Per Click' - PPC - advertising model) and collecting personal data (which is later sold to third party companies).
How did CinemaP install on my computer?
This adware is commonly distributed as a 'bundle' with regular applications. The developers are aware that many users rush when downloading and installing software, and thus, conceal PUPs such as CinemaP within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.
By skipping this section and rushing the download and installation processes, users often install rogue applications inadvertently. Developers are concerned only with the amount of revenue generated, which is dependent on the number of PUPs distributed, and therefore, they do not properly disclose installation of deceptive programs such as CinemaP.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This situation can be avoided by paying close attention during the download and installation processes. Select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled programs listed for installation and allow you to decline them. By rushing these processes and skipping steps, users expose their systems to risk of infection.
