What is Super Media Converter?
The Super Media Converter application claims to provide file format conversion features - "Super Media Converter is a professional audio file converter for Windows that makes converting files fun, fast and easy! Simply drop your file into the converter and click convert! We currently support the following file types: Mp3, FLV, MP4, MPG, WAV, AVI, OGG, M4A, 3GP."
These fake promises are used to trick users into believing that Super Media Converter is a legitimate application, however, this app is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP), since it infiltrates systems without users' permission.
Following successful installation, Super Media Converter continually monitoring users' Internet browsing activity and displays intrusive online advertisements.
Intrusive ads are displayed using a virtual layer, which enables placement of third party graphical content on any visited websites. Initially, ads generated by Super Media Converter (including banners and pop-ups) may seem harmless, however, they promote various untrusted sites, some of which might be malicious and contain infectious content.
There is a chance that clicking these ads will cause further high-risk adware or malware infection. Ads of this type do not originate from the visited sites and conceal underlying content, thereby diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Super Media Converter continually tracks Internet browsing activity and gathers various user/system information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic locations), website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc. The developers later share this information with third parties.
Some data might be personally identifiable and later misused by third party companies generate revenue - this situation can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly recommend that you uninstall Super Media Converter as immediately.
Super Media Converter shares many similarities with WinClock, RapidMediaConverter, SpeedyMediaConverter, and tens of other adware-type applications. Adware claims to provide a range of useful features, however, fake promises delivered by these apps are simply attempts to trick users to install.
Adware-type applications are designed to generate revenue by displaying ads (via the 'Pay Per Click' - PPC - advertising model) and collecting personally identifiable information (which is later sold to third parties) - they provide none of the functionality promised.
How did Super Media Converter install on my computer?
This PUP is available for anyone to download on its official website, however, many users install this application inadvertently, since developers distribute Super Media Converter using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of PUPs with the chosen software/apps).
Many users rush the download and installation processes. Aware of this, developers hide rogue applications within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By skipping this section, users inadvertently install PUPs and expose their systems to high-risk adware or malware infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two simple steps you should take to protect your system from adware-type computer infections. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options and analyze all steps. Secondly, decline all offers to download or install additional applications, since bundled software is most likely to be rogue.
