Dnsioweb.net Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is dnsioweb.net?
DNSIO is a deceptive application claiming to protect users from various computer infections when browsing the Internet.
On initial inspection, this functionality may appear legitimate and useful, however, DNSIO is classed as a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted program (PUP), since it infiltrates systems and Internet browsers without users' consent. It also modifies browser settings and monitors browsing activity.
DNSIO assigns the default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL browser settings of Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox to the dnsioweb.net website, which redirects users to yahoo.com (a legitimate site). These settings are modified without users' consent, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience, since users are continually redirected to dnsioweb.net.
In addition, this app installs a number of applications and browser add-ons that prevent users from rolling back these changes. DNSIO also modifies computers DNS settings, which might cause various Internet browsing errors.
Furthermore, DNSIO tracks and records various Internet browsing-related information such as IP addresses, websites visited, search queries entered into search engines, and pages viewed. These details may seem insignificant, however, they might contain personally identifiable information, which is later shared with third parties.
Therefore, the presence of DNSIO on your system can lead to various privacy issues and you are advised to eliminate this application immediately.
DNSIO has similar characteristics to hundreds of other browser-hijacking applications including pesquisa.ninja, baboom.audio, and dealwifi.com. These apps claim to provide a range of useful features, however, these fake promises are simply attempts to trick users to install.
Once installed, they provide no real value for users - they diminish the Internet browsing experience by causing unwanted browser redirects and displaying ads, and may even cause various privacy issues.
How did DNSIO install on my computer?
Although DNSIO has an official download website, it is likely to be distributed as a 'bundle' with other (usually free) software. Bundled applications are often concealed within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, and since many users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software, this distribution method is very effective.
By rushing the download and installation processes and skipping most/all steps, users often expose their systems to risk of infection. The developers of rogue apps are concerned only with the amount of revenue generated, and thus, do not properly disclose installation of bogus apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Do not rush the download or installation processes. Follow each step to ensure that only the desired software is downloaded/installed. To achieve this, use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings - this will reveal any concealed rogue applications listed for installation and enable you to opt-out.
