DislikeOnFB Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is DislikeOnFB?
The DislikeOnFB application supposedly allows users to 'dislike' various Facebook posts. This unique feature is used to trick users into believing that DislikeOnFB is a legitimate and useful app, however, it is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Following successful infiltration on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox), DislikeOnFB displays intrusive online advertisements and monitors users' Internet browsing activity.
This PUP generates in-text, interstitial, display, and other similar ads. These are displayed using a virtual layer, which enables placement of any third party graphical content on visited websites.
This behavior significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience, since the ads do not originate from the visited sites and conceal underlying content - forcing the user to avoid clicking them.
When clicked, most redirect to e-commerce websites such as online stores, however, some can redirect to untrusted sites containing infectious content - thus, clicking them may result in further computer infections.
In addition, DislikeOnFB monitors Internet browsing activity and gathers information such as IP addresses, operating system, browser type, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc. Although this information may seem insignificant, some will contain personally identifiable details.
Developers of DislikeOnFB can later share collected data with third party companies who can misuse it to generate revenue. Therefore, having DislikeOnFB installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall DislikeOnFB immediately.
DislikeOnFB is a regular adware-type application and similar to hundreds of other PUPs including TermTrident, BrowserProtect, and RapidReader.
Adware-type applications are developed to offer many useful features to give the impression of legitimacy. These promises are false, since most adware-type apps are useless to the user. PUPs such as DislikeOnFB are designed to generate revenue by displaying advertisements and collecting information - they deliver none of the features promised.
How did DislikeOnFB install on my computer?
DislikeOnFB is often distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of additional apps with regular software. Developers intentionally hide bogus applications within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, thus, making bundling very effective.
Many users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software - they skip most/all of the steps, thereby inadvertently exposing the system to risk of infection or inadvertently installing PUPs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of adware-type apps can be prevented by closely analyzing the download and installation processes.
Express caution when downloading and installing software and decline all offers to download or install third party applications. In addition, use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled software listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
