What is FastPlayer?
FastPlayer claims to be a legitimate media player allowing users to play online videos, create playlists, and provide other similar features - "With fast-player you can create your own playlist adding your favorite internet video clips and video or audio stored on your PC!"
Some users may find this application legitimate and useful, however, FastPlayer is categorized as adware and potentially unwanted program (PUP). The main reasons for these negative associations are stealth installation without users' consent, display of intrusive online advertisements, and tracking of Internet browsing activity.
FastPlayer displays a variety of advertisements. According to the Privacy Policy of this PUP, the developers are not responsible for the sites to which users are redirected. Some of the ads may redirect to rogue sites, thereby causing high-risk computer infections.
They also hide underlying content, and therefore, diminish the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, FastPlayer collects various Internet browsing-related information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geolocations), unique identifier numbers, operating system, software/hardware configuration, browsing data (websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, online shopping details, etc.), and other collected information that may be personally identifiable.
This data is later shared with third parties and can be misused to generate revenue. This situation can lead to serious privacy issues. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall FastPlayer from your system immediately.
FastPlayer Privacy Policy regarding information sharing with third parties:
We may share and sell user information to third party service providers who perform market research and analytics services, measure website usage, performance and traffic counts, identify consumer product interests and purchasing behavior, and prepare market research and activity reports for their clients.
FastPlayer is regular adware. There are hundreds of other PUPs with similar characteristics. As with FastPlayer, applications such as SnapSearch, Skyrocket Player, Jabuticaba, Playthru Player, and many others, also offer 'valuable' features. These false claims are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy.
The purpose of FastPlayer, and other adware-type applications, is to display advertisements and collect data to generate revenue - they provide no significant value for the user.
How did FastPlayer install on my computer?
FastPlayer is likely to be distributed as a 'bundle' with other (mostly free) software. Research shows that most users are unaware that potentially unwanted programs are usually hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By rushing the download/installation processes and skipping these sections, they inadvertently install potentially unwanted programs such as FastPlayer.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Do not rush the download or installation processes. Each step should be closely analyzed to ensure that there are no third party applications included. Furthermore, these processes should be performed with the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any concealed rogue apps listed for installation and enable you to decline them.
