What is Jabuticaba?
Jabuticaba is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that supposedly allows users to collect 'points' while shopping online and redeem them for rewards - "Shopping online has never been more rewarding - or fun! Join Jabuticaba and collect free gifts, coupons and fantastic rewards by doing just what you are doing today - shopping online. No fees, no catch, just rewards."
Some users may believe that Jabuticaba is legitimate and useful software, however, it is classed as adware. Although Jabuticaba has an official download website, it often infiltrates systems without users' permission.
After successfully infiltrating Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Jabuticaba displays intrusive online advertisements and gathers various types of information.
To display in-text, banner, coupon, and other similar advertisements, Jabuticaba employs a virtual layer, which enables placement of third party graphical content on any visited website. These ads diminish the Internet browsing experience by concealing underlying content, and might also redirect to infectious sites, thereby causing high-risk computer infections.
In addition, Jabuticaba collects various information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic locations), visited sites, pages, browser type, and other similar data.
This gathered information is later shared with third parties, and since it may contain personally identifiable details, third party companies can misuse it to generate revenue. Thus, the presence of Jabuticaba on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall this adware.
Jabuticaba Privacy Policy regarding online advertising:
We accept advertisements from third party advertisers. These advertisers are carefully selected to provide our Users with relevant and beneficial advertisements. Note that if you click on any of these advertisements, these advertisers may use cookies and other web-tracking technologies to collect non-personal and/or personal information about you. We recommend that you review the terms of use and privacy policy for any advertiser with which you are interacting before doing so. Their privacy policy, not ours, will apply to any of those interactions.
Jabuticaba is identical to several other adware-type applications including, for example, Shopperz. It is also similar to many other adware-type apps such as Unfollow Alert, Unfriend List, Lights Cinema, and TermCoach.
All adware-type applications claim to improve Internet browsing in different ways, however, all have similar or identical behavior - they display intrusive online advertisements and collect personally identifiable information. Adware-type apps are developed to generate revenue and provide no real value for the user.
How did Jabuticaba install on my computer?
Jabuticaba is often distributed as a 'bundle' with regular (mostly free) software. Developers of bogus applications are aware that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software, and therefore, they intentionally conceal their products within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.
By rushing the download/installation procedures and skipping most steps, users expose their systems to risk of infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To avoid this situation, pay close attention during the download and installation processes. Closely follow each step and ensure that no third party applications are included. Use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options during these two processes - this will reveal any potentially unwanted programs listed for installation and enable you to cancel them.
