FusionPlayer Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is FusionPlayer?
FusionPlayer is presented as a legitimate app used to play music, create playlists, watch videos, online streams, etc.
- "With the latest version of Fusion player, you can give full reign to your creativity when it comes to making playlists. You will be able to mix and match all sorts of media, from videos to sound clips, and even use online streaming videos from websites such as Youtube or Dailymotion."
Some users may find this functionality legitimate and useful, however, FusionPlayer is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted programs (PUP). After system infiltration, FusionPlayer displays intrusive online advertisements and collects personally identifiable information.
This application displays WebBrowser advertisements (for example, banners and pop-ups) that might redirect to various bogus websites. Therefore, clicking them can lead to high-risk computer infections. These ads diminish the browsing experience by concealing underlying content.
Some open as new browser tabs/windows, thus increasing the chance of accidental user clicks. FusionPlayer continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity and collects information that can be personally identifiable. The gathered data is later shared with third parties and could be misused to generate revenue.
This situation can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you are worried about your privacy and Internet browsing safety, uninstall FusionPlayer adware immediately.
FusionPlayer is regular adware and similar to hundreds of other PUPs including The Results Hub, CloudScout, Cool Browser, and ArcadeYum. Adware-type ads provide none of the features promised - claims to enhance the Internet browsing experience are merely attempts to trick users to install.
The purpose of FusionPlayer, and other similar apps, is to generate revenue for the developers by displaying intrusive online ads and collecting personally identifiable data. They deliver no real value for the user.
How did FusionPlayer install on my computer?
FusionPlayer is often distributed as a 'bundle' with other (mostly free) software. Bundling is commonly used to monetize freeware download websites' traffic and free services (or to monetize the free software).
Since many users rush the download/installation processes, this method is effective, since bogus apps such as FusionPlayer are often hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of potentially unwanted programs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
All software should be downloaded from official websites. If this is unavailable, and you are downloading from a freeware download website, select the direct download link, rather than using a promoted download manager. If the website demands use of a download manager, closely follow each step and decline all offers to install third party software.
Furthermore, downloaded programs should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled software listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
