What is Cool Browser?
The Cool Browser application claims to be a legitimate Internet browser designed to deliver faster Internet browsing, protect users' privacy, and provide them with online anonymity. This software is identical to its previous version - Speed Browser.
Both versions may initially seem legitimate and useful, however, as with Speed Browser, Cool Browser is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
There are a number of reasons for these negative associations. Cool Browser often installs on systems without users' permission, and furthermore, after successful infiltration, the app modifies browser settings, tracks Internet browsing activity, and delivers unwanted ads.
Cool Browser modifies the Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL settings by assigning them to the trovi.com website. This is done without users' consent.
The behavior of Cool Browser significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience - when users attempt to search the Internet or simply open new browser tabs, they are redirected to trovi.com.
In addition, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since Cool Browser collects information such as geolocations, IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and so on. The gathered information is later shared with third parties and may contain personally identifiable details.
Therefore, having an information-tracking app installed on your system can lead to privacy issues. Furthermore, the displayed advertisements (pop-up/under, banner, in-text, interstitial, etc.) might redirect to infectious websites, and thus, clicking them can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
You are strongly advised to uninstall the Cool Browser application from your system immediately (trovi.com redirect removal guide).
Cool Browser Privacy Policy regarding information tracking:
We may share the information that We collect about You, including personal information collectively, "information"), as follows: ... Other Third Parties. We may disclose the information We collect about You to other third-parties for marketing, advertising, research, products and/ or other services. ...
As well as Speed Browser, Cool Browser is also similar or identical to other adware-type apps such as The Results Hub, CloudScout, and ArcadeTwist.
Adware-type apps promise various useful features to supposedly improve the Internet browsing experience, however, none provide any real value - their purpose is to generate revenue for the developers by displaying advertisements and collecting personally identifiable information.
How did Cool Browser install on my computer?
Cool Browser is often distributed as a 'bundle' with free software downloadable on freeware download websites. Bundling is stealth installation of third party apps with regular software, and since many users rush the download/installation processes, this method is extremely effective.
Many users are unaware that bogus apps such as Cool Browser are often hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation section. By skipping these settings, they inadvertently install potentially unwanted programs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Pay close attention during download/installation and never rush these processes. Closely analyze each step of the free software download procedure and ensure that only the chosen app is downloaded.
Furthermore, apps should be installed with the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings - this will reveal any concealed third party software listed for installation and enable you to opt-out.
