OverLook

What is OverLook?
Due to various features offered (such as building analytic reports in SEO, SEM, and SMM cases, which are useful for Internet Marketing professionals), OverLook may seem legitimate and useful software.
This application, however, is distributed using the 'bundling' method and is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). It is often bundled with free software downloadable on freeware download websites, and for this reason, users often install this application inadvertently without their consent.
This software can monitor and record certain Internet browsing-related information including browser type, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and device type. Many PUPs such as this are also categorized as adware or malware, and track various user-information.
Some of the data collected by these rogue applications may be personally identifiable and shared with third parties - this behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Furthermore, potentially unwanted applications can display intrusive ads that redirect to bogus websites, thereby infecting the computer system.
Although OverLook is not a virus or malware (it does not display unwanted ads or cause browser redirects), it has no user interface and is useless for users who have unwillingly installed it. Therefore, you are advised to uninstall this software immediately. The purpose of the OverLook application is to share collected anonymous information with third parties.
Many Internet users download software from various freeware download websites such as downloads.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, etc. The problem is that these sites monetize their traffic and free services via small programs called 'download clients', which supposedly ease the download process.
These programs are developed simply to display offers of third party software installation, which lead to infiltration by PUPs. These promoted applications are described as 'harmless and legitimate', however, they are generally untrusted and may cause various problems. Therefore, download and installation of third party apps should never be accepted.
How did OverLook install on my computer?
OverLook can be downloaded on the official website, however, it mostly installs together with free software.
Third party applications are bundled with free software to monetize freeware download websites' services and free software. Download managers and installer set-ups neglect to properly disclose installation of additional applications, thus, users often inadvertently install these applications.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Closely analyse the download process of free software and opt out of any additional programs. Furthermore, follow each step when installing software - third party applications are often hidden within the 'Custom' or either 'Advanced' installation options, and therefore, you should never skip any installation steps.
