The Desktop Weather Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is The Desktop Weather?
The Desktop Weather application allows users to monitor weather forecasts directly from the desktop. Some users may find this functionality legitimate and useful, however, The Desktop Weather is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
The main reason for these negative associations is a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' used in distribution of this bogus application. Bundling allows developers to stealthily install The Desktop Weather together with regular software without users' permission.
Users often inadvertently install this application with free software downloaded from freeware download websites. Following successful installation, The Desktop Weather causes unwanted browser redirects, displays intrusive online advertisements, and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
This rogue application displays search, pop-up, pop-under, and other similar ads. There is a high probability that some of these advertisements will redirect to dubious websites, thereby leading to high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, this application collects unique identifier numbers, websites visited, search queries entered into the search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.), pages viewed, IP addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), and other similar information.
Some of this collected information may be personally identifiable, and therefore, having information-tracking applications installed on your system might result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. There are hundreds of applications similar or identical to The Desktop Weather including OffersWizard, Price Less, Shopsafer, and Halt-It.
These adware infections claim to enable certain features and enhance the Internet browsing experience - for example, by saving time and money while shopping online.
Be aware, however, that The Desktop Weather and these other apps simply display intrusive online advertisements and collect various information to generate revenue. You are strongly advised to uninstall The Desktop Weather from your system immediately.
The developers of The Desktop Weather (ShenZhen Enode Technology co Ltd) often distribute this application on freeware download websites such as soft32.com, softonic.com, downloads.com, and many others.
These sites monetize their traffic and free services via small programs called 'download clients', which offer installation of third party applications together with the chosen software. Although these apps are described as '100% legitimate and virus-free', reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
To avoid this situation, closely inspect each step of the free software download procedure and ensure that no third party applications are included.
Furthermore, downloaded programs should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any bundled apps listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If you have installed The Desktop Weather, the following removal instructions will help you to eliminate this adware from your system.
