MySoftToday Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MySoftToday?
The MySoftToday browser add-on claims to allow users to find and download various Android Apps either for free or at a reduced price. This extension may seem legitimate and useful, however, MySoftToday is classified as adware and potentially unwanted program (PUP).
A deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' is used in MySoftToday adware distribution - this allows developers to stealthily install their applications together with regular software without users' permission.
Once MySoftToday is installed on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, users will observe a wide range of intrusive online ads that are likely to redirect to bogus websites, thereby, causing further computer infections.
Research shows that most adware-type applications collect various Internet browsing-related software and hardware information. Data collected by MySoftToday includes Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.
There is a high probability that this recorded information will be personally identifiable, and therefore, this type of information tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft. Adware-type applications claim to offer various 'useful features', however, this is merely to trick users into installation.
For instance, Shop Smart, Find-A-Deal, PriceMinus, and ShoppinGate claim to save time and money while shopping online, and yet, none provide any real value. The purpose of adware such as MySoftToday is to generate revenue by the display of ads and sharing collected data with third parties. Therefore, you are strongly advised to uninstall this PUP from your system immediately.
Popular freeware download websites such as soft32.com, softonic.com, downloads.com, and many others, monetize their traffic via small programs called 'download applications' (also called 'installers', 'download managers', download clients', 'download tools', etc.) Download applications are developed to include third party applications together with the chosen software.
Although these extra apps are described as 'genuine and virus-free', lack of attention during download and installation of freeware commonly results in adware or malware infections. You can avoid this situation by closely inspecting each step when downloading free software, and ensuring that no other applications are included.
Furthermore, downloaded apps should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any concealed apps listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. The following instructions will guide you through removal of MySoftToday adware from your system.
