What is System-Checker?
System-Checker is a bogus application that supposedly allows users to monitor various system-related information (CPU, memory, etc.). This functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, System-Checker is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) or adware.
The developers of this rogue app (MC Software Inc.) employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party apps together with the chosen software) to install System-Checker on computers without users' permission.
Following installation, System-Checker generates numerous intrusive online advertisements and monitors users' Internet browsing activity.
Intrusive advertisements generated by this rogue application may redirect to bogus websites, thereby exposing your computer to infection. Furthermore, System-Checker records various Internet browsing-related information including operating system, IP addresses, geo-location, websites visited, pages viewed, search/browsing history, and other similar details.
In addition, if System-Checker is installed on a mobile device, it collects the call history, text messages, photos, contacts, IP addresses, hashed IMEI (as a unique identifier number), social media accounts, and social networks.
Be aware that some of this data is likely to be personally identifiable, and therefore, having this application installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall the System-Checker application from your system immediately.
There are hundreds of PUPs similar to System-Checker including, for instance, CasinoRewards, Web Shield, and Rapid Media Converter. These offer various useful functions, however, none provide any real value to the user. System-Checker, and other adware, is developed to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected data with third parties.
Most adware is distributed using small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as, download.com, soft32.com, etc. Download clients offer installation of third party applications (described as '100% legitimate and virus-free') to monetize these websites' traffic and free services.
Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections. This situation can be avoided by closely analysing each step of the free software download procedure and unchecking all third party programs or browser plug-ins included.
Furthermore, installation of downloaded software should be performed using the 'Custom' or 'Additional' options - this will reveal any concealed apps listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If you have installed System-Checker, the following guidelines will help you to eliminate this adware from your system.
