MagnoPlayer Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MagnoPlayer?
Created by SoftForce LLC, MagnoPlayer claims to allow users to take full control of their media (for example, by mixing audio and video files).
This may seem to be a legitimate and useful application, however, MagnoPlayer is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP), since it employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install on Internet browsers without users' consent.
Bundling is a way to stealthily distribute applications together with other software, and therefore, most users install MagnoPlayer during download of free software from freeware download websites.
After successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, MagnoPlayer diminishes browser performance, generates intrusive online advertisements, and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
MagnoPlayer collects software and hardware information such as operating system type, installed applications, IP addresses, browser type, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, cookies, and other data that may be personally identifiable. This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft.
Furthermore, MagnoPlayer delivers intrusive online advertisements including banners (labelled as 'Ads by MagnoPlayer') that may lead to further computer infections. You are strongly advised to uninstall MagnoPlayer from your system immediately.
Close examination of MagnoPlayer reveals that it mostly distributed via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, soft32.com and many others. Download managers are used to monetize these websites' free services by offering installation of additional programs together with the chosen software.
Although the developers claim that these applications are '100% legitimate and virus-free', reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections including, for example, CrossBrowser, PrestoSavings, and Object Browser among many others - these are also distributed using the bundling method.
Note that all of these applications are similar to MagnoPlayer, however, none provide any significant value, since they are developed to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected data with third parties.
Installation of MagnoPlayer, or other similar adware, can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download procedure and never accepting installation of any additional programs offered.
Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If you have installed MagnoPlayer, and you observe intrusive online ads while surfing the Internet, follow the removal guide below to eliminate this potentially unwanted program from your Internet browsers.
