What is Rad Raven?
Created by SuperWeb LLC, Rad Raven is a rogue browser extension claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and other features. On initial inspection, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that Rad Raven is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The developers of this rogue browser plug-in employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) to install Rad Raven on Internet browsers without users' permission.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Rad Raven generates intrusive online ads such as banner, search, interstitial, pop-up, transitional, and full-page ads. There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will lead to further high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since Rad Raven collects various software and hardware information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered, unique identifier numbers, and other similar data that is likely to be personally identifiable.
This information tracking may result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. The developers of this adware have released several hundred rogue browser plug-ins identical to Rad Raven. Hold Page, Web Result, and BrowseStudio are just some examples.
Neither Rad Raven, nor any of these other applications provide any significant value for the user. SuperWeb LLC intentionally releases identical browser extensions under different names to prevent detection by legitimate anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
The purpose of these applications is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected information with third parties. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to eliminate Rad Raven from your Internet browsers.
Close examination of Rad Raven reveals that it is mostly distributed via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as softonic.com, soft32.com, and download.com.
Download managers are used to monetize these websites' free services by offering installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, careless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
To prevent installation of Rad Raven, or other similar adware, express caution when downloading free software and never accept installation of any additional applications offered.
Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Regular' - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If your system is infected with Rad Raven, and you observe intrusive online advertisements such as 'Ads by Rad Raven', 'Powered by Rad Raven', or 'Rad Raven Deals', follow the removal instructions below to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
