What is SurfShield?
Developed by Holdsmart Technology LTD, SurfShield is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to protect users from infecting their computers when visiting malicious websites. On initial inspection, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that SurfShield is categorized as adware.
SurfShield employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional applications together with the chosen software) to install on Internet browsers without users' permission.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome, SurfShield tracks users' Internet browsing activity and generates intrusive online advertisements.
Advertisements generated by SurfShield include (but are not limited to) banner, transitional, and in-text ads. There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, this PUP continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording various software and hardware information such as IP addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), operating system and browser types, search queries entered, website URLs visited, pages viewed, unique identifier numbers, and other similar details that may be personally identifiable.
This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
There are many rogue applications similar to SurfShield. Examples include IneedSpeed, PriceHorse, and Lampy Lighty among many others. Neither SurfShield, nor any of these other browser plug-ins are useful to the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads.
Research shows that most adware is distributed via small download programs (called 'download managers', 'installers', 'download clients', etc.) on freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, soft32.com, and many others.
These programs are used to monetize the download websites' free services and traffic by offering installation of advertised '100% legitimate' browser extensions together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware risks computer infection with adware and malware.
To prevent installation of SurfShield, or other similar adware, be attentive when downloading free software and never accept installation of any additional programs offered.
Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Regular' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. If your system is infected with SurfShield, read the following removal guide and eliminate this adware.
