IneedSpeed Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is IneedSpeed?
Developed by Virtue Interactive Ltd, IneedSpeed is a rogue browser extension that claims to allow users to check and observe their Internet speed. On initial inspection, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that IneedSpeed is considered to be adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The developers of this extension employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install IneedSpeed on Internet browsers without users' permission. Bundling is a way to stealthily distribute applications together with other software, and therefore, most users infect their computers with IneedSpeed during download of free software.
After successfully infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, IneedSpeed generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
Advertisements generated by this rogue application include banner, pop-up, pop-under, in-text, and display ads. There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, IneedSpeed continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording various software and hardware information that is likely to be personally identifiable.
For example: Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, web browser data including cookies, web beacons, website URLs visited, search queries entered into search engines, pages viewed, and other similar details.
This information tracking may result in serious privacy issues or identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate IneedSpeed from your Internet browser.
IneedSpeed is similar to many rogue applications that employ bundling as an installation method. Some examples are SpeeditUp, PopToTop, SpeedChecker, and SelectNGo.
Neither IneedSpeed, nor any of these other applications, provide any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate income by the display of intrusive online ads and by enforcing unwanted browser redirects.
Research shows that users often inadvertently install adware such as IneedSpeed during download of free software via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites including download.com, softonic.com, and soft32.com.
Download managers are used to monetize these websites' free services and traffic by offering installation of promoted '100% legitimate and virus-free' browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, careless download and installation of freeware risks system infection with adware or malware.
Installation of IneedSpeed, or other similar adware, can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download process and never accepting installation of any additional applications offered.
Furthermore, if you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If you have installed IneedSpeed, and experience intrusive online ads while surfing the Internet, read the removal instructions provided and uninstall this adware from your Internet browsers.
