What is SpeeditUp?
Created by Virtue Interactive Ltd, SpeeditUp is a rogue browser extension claiming to allow users to check their Internet speed. Although this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that SpeeditUp is considered to be adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
These associations are made due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' employed by SpeeditUp to install on Internet browsers without users' consent. Bundling is a way to stealthily distribute applications together with other software, and therefore, most users inadvertently install SpeeditUp during download of free software from freeware download websites.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, SpeeditUp generates intrusive online advertisements including in-text, pop-up/under, banner, and display ads. It is highly probable that clicking these advertisements will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, SpeeditUp continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity by collecting various software and hardware information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), web browser data including cookies, web beacons, search queries entered, website URLs visited, pages viewed, and other similar details that may be personally identifiable.
This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft. SpeeditUp is similar to other adware that employs bundling as an installation method.
For example: zoomifyapp, safetysearch, poptotop, and linkey among many others. These applications are useless to the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and enforcing unwanted browser redirects. Therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate SpeeditUp from your Internet browsers.
Close examination of SpeeditUp reveals that it is mostly distributed via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, and many others.
Download managers are used by these websites as free service monetization tools, since they offer installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% virus-free') browser add-ons together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
This situation can be avoided by paying close attention during the download of free software and never accepting installation of any additional applications offered.
Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If your system is infected with SpeeditUp, read the removal instructions provided to eliminate this adware from your system.
SpeeditUp adware is identical to previously potentially unwanted programs which were named CheckMeUp, SpeedCheck, and SpeedChecker.
