Taplika.com Browser Hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Taplika.com?
The Taplika browser toolbar claims to improve the quality of users' Internet browsing experience by allowing instant access to popular social networking websites (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) and displaying advanced Internet search results. This toolbar is compatible with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox.
Although this may appear to be a useful and legitimate browser extension, Taplika is referred to by most users as a redirect virus or browser hijacker. These associations are made since this rogue browser add-on employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install on Internet browsers without users' consent.
Bundling is a way to stealthily distribute additional applications together with the chosen software, and therefore, most users inadvertently install Taplika during download of free software from freeware download websites.
Today, most popular freeware download websites (for example, download.com, softonic.com, soft32.com, etc.) use small download programs called 'download managers' or 'download clients' as free service monetization tools.
These programs allow distributors to install additional applications (toolbars, widgets, browser add-ons, etc.) together with the users' chosen free software.
Although it is stated that these applications are '100% legitimate and virus-free', reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections that are likely to cause intrusive online advertisements, privacy issues, or in the case of Taplika.com, unwanted browser redirects.
The Taplika browser hijacker was developed by IronSource Ltd. There are many dubious browser extensions similar to Taplika including Groovorio, BuenoSearch, Enhanced-Search, and Royal-Search. These potentially unwanted programs generate intrusive online ads and modify Internet browser settings.
Although Taplika.com poses no direct virus or malware threats, most users are redirected to this website without their consent. If your homepage, default search engine, and URL settings for new tabs are set to taplika.com without your permission, read the following removal guide to eliminate this browser hijacker from your Internet browsers.
