What is Lightning-Savings?
Developed by a company called Engaging Apps, the Lightning-Savings rogue browser add-on claims to save time and money by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and displaying discounts/special offers available within online stores.
While such browser extensions may seem legitimate, be aware that this add-on is categorized as a potentially unwanted application or adware. Lightning-Savings employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to stealthily install on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent.
Following successful infiltration, Lightning-Savings generates intrusive online advertisements and monitors users Internet browsing activity.
These intrusive advertisements include banner, pop-under, sponsored link, interstitial, coupon, and targeted video ads. It is highly probable that clicking these advertisements will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections. Furthermore, Lightning-Savings monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording various information, which might be personally identifiable.
For example: Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, URLs visited, pages viewed, cookies, geo-locations, and other similar details. This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate Lightning-Savings from your Internet browsers.
This potentially unwanted application is similar to other rogue browser add-ons claiming to improve users' Internet browsing experience by enabling useful functions. CrazyCoupon, ProtectedBrowsing, Wifi Protector, and Clean Browse are just a few examples amongst many others.
These browser extensions are useless to the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Internet users commonly install adware such as Lightning-Savings when downloading free software via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites. Most of these websites (for example, download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, etc.) employ download managers as their free service monetization tool.
Download managers offer installation of promoted 'legitimate' browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, careless download and installation of freeware frequently leads to adware or malware infections.
To avoid installation of Lightning-Savings, or other potentially unwanted applications, pay close attention during the download of free software and never accept installation of any additional programs offered.
If you are installing downloaded software, choose the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any hidden applications and allow you to remove them from the installation list. If you have already installed Lightning-Savings, and observe intrusive online advertisements, read the following removal guide to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
